Jobs: Force Protection Specialist, Kosovo

This gig is a little on the low end, pay wise, but it is a nice little gig in a country that is very cheap to live in. This job has also been flying since February.  Although, like most of these types of assignments, they are always cycling guys in and out. -Head Jundi

News: Tactical Biorefineries go to Iraq

Very cool news.  A portable refinery would be very nice in Iraq and elswhere.  Imagine being able to convert the trash and any locally bought oil, into fuel for the rigs on your site?  Kind of cool, and might actually save a little money and some lives, if they can reduce fuel convoys with this.  Something to watch I guess.  -Head Jundi

Tactical biorefineries go to Iraq
By David Ehrlich
Published April 29, 2008 - 7:46am
Transporting fuel to military base camps is a dangerous job for soldiers, but a new biorefinery from the U.S. Army’s research and development center could cut down on the need for some of those fuel convoys, which are often targets in war zones.

The Army’s two prototypes of the Tactical Garbage to Energy Refinery, or TGER, are shipping out to Victory Base Camp in Baghdad today for a 90 day test of the units under extreme working conditions.

The refineries, which can take in food slop, plastic, paper and styrofoam and output synthetic gas or hydrous ethanol, were developed by McLean, Va.-based defense contractor Defense Life Sciences, Purdue University and the Army’s Edgewood Chemical Biological Center in Maryland.

“It actually hits about 130 degrees there in August,” said James Valdes, the scientific advisor for biotechnology at the Edgewood center, to Cleantech.com about Baghdad.

He said the TGERs, pronounced “tigers,” should be back stateside by then, but there will still be plenty of heat and other challenges for the biorefineries before the testing is done.

“I was there about a month ago. Every afternoon, as the wind kicks up — gets all the sand and dust in the air — very fine dust gets into everything,” said Valdes.

Tactical Thought Process: Why Doing a Proper Search is so Important

What can I say about this video?  I guess you could say, that it is the kind of video that really emphasizes how important attention to detail is, and how important proper procedure is.  It shows you exactly why you want to be extremely thorough in your searches and always watch those hands. I am not a police officer or even a former police officer, but it would seem to me, that the safest bet would have been to clear this guy out in the field first, to find any big stuff or obvious weapons that would have been easy to find in the initial pat down.  I will give the officers credit for being able to jump on the guy, and stop the attack so quick.  But I have to say, “how could this have been avoided?”  The video is a little long, but hang with it.  -Head Jundi

Weapons Stuff: Finding Good Deals on Ammunition

This little post will be quick.  A huge part of this industry, is training.  In order to keep your shooting skills sharp, you do a ton of dry firing, but eventually you need to ‘pull some trigger’ and shoot some live stuff.  So how do you find good deals on the ammunition you need?  Well, I have found one answer to that question.

At Gun Deals.com , they actually have a section dedicated to searching the web for the best prices on ammunition.  And not only does it do that, but it accepts suggestions from anyone, about where to get the best deals on ammo.  So it is a hybrid search engine of a sorts.  The bottom line, is you just input what ammo you are looking for, and all the current prices for tons of different manufacturers will come up.

It is one of those sites, that you could use for last minute purchases, or you could continue to watch it over time, and move in on a good deal when you see it.  There are similar sites out there, and if anyone else has a favorite ammunition deals search engine besides just a plain Google Search or going to a gun show, I am all ears.  -Head Jundi

Weapons Stuff: Custom Selectors for the AK 47

In this review, I wanted to talk about the various options for custom selector levers. One of the big drawbacks of the AK 47, is the selector lever. With these two types of selectors that I have listed, and with some modification to your AK, you could have a weapon system that you can switch to ‘fire’ and back to ’safe’ with your index finger. You will also have the ability to lock the bolt open, which is a nice feature. I would like to hear any other input about selectors out there, and I am by no means an AK expert. And as a disclaimer, please find an armorer to do this modification for you, if you have no knowledge of such things. If you guys have any input on this, fire away. -Head Jundi

Krebs MK IV

FEATURES: MK IV:  While the standard AK selector lever is well designed for the function it performs, it ’s operation does require the shooter to remove the firing hand from the pistol grip.  The Krebs Custom AK selector lever allows for manipulation of the selector while maintaining the shooting hand in firing position, as well as provides a notch for locking back the bolt for inspection.  A one for one replacement of the OEM part.

Contractors are here to stay

By Florence Olsen
Published on April 14, 2008
When presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) declared in 2007 that she would eliminate 500,000 federal contractors if elected president, some policy experts said she couldn’t do it. One of those experts was Steven Schooner, senior associate dean of academic affairs and associate professor of law at George Washington University.

Whether the federal government relies too much on contractors is an interesting — but irrelevant — philosophical, public policy and moral question, Schooner said in an interview.

“The reason it is irrelevant is we have engaged now for more than a generation in a bipartisan legislative and executive effort to create the appearance of a small government,” Schooner said. “We all know that government hasn’t gotten smaller.”

News: US Sells Anti-IED Tech to Iraq?

Thanks to Doug, for sending me this info.  This is one to watch, if in fact this sale goes through.  Hopefully, if they do get this stuff, that the technology will be safeguarded.  And that is what worries me about this. -Head Jundi

US Sells Secret Anti-IED Tech to Iraq

The U.S. has taken the unprecedented — and some would say questionable — step of selling some of its most sophisticated counter-IED technology to the Iraqi government, equipping specialized police, military and interior ministry troops with electronic systems designed to detonate roadside bombs and jam triggering signals.

Officials from Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq announced April 20 that its foreign military sales office had sold the Iraqis 411 Lockheed Martin-built “Symphony” counter-IED systems. A few of the Symphony systems are already up and running on Iraqi government vehicles, the command said, with the rest due to be installed by the end of the summer.

“This system will afford the Iraqi security forces long-term, independent counter-IED protection and relieves coalition troops from this responsibility so the latter may perform other tasks,” said Army Lt. Col. Will Flucker, the command’s Symphony program manager, in an April 20 release. “This system is a critical part of security transition from the coalition forces to the government of Iraq and integral to developing [Iraqi security forces] into a long-term partner in the global war on terror.”
