Afghan-Led Force Captures Taliban Commander, Suspected Insurgents Dressed as WomenISAF Joint Command – Afghanistan2010-07-CA-195For Immediate Release
KABUL, Afghanistan (July 27) – An Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban sub-commander and several additional suspected insurgents in Paktika province last night. The commander, who operates mainly in Mota Khan, conducts improvised explosive device (IED) attacks against coalition force convoys and facilitates explosives for his network. The security force surrounded the targeted compound east of Sharan and Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to peacefully exit the buildings. Several men attempted to disguise themselves by dressing in female attire before exiting the compound; however they were immediately identified and detained for further questioning. The sub-commander and several suspected insurgents were detained. The assault force discovered automatic weapons, ammunition, magazines and a bayonet, along with IED material including 31 IED pressures switches and multiple pressure plates. A bag of Pakistani, Afghani and American cash was also found at the scene. No shots were fired and the women and children were protected throughout the search.”This is another successful blow to the Taliban operating in Paktika,” said Col. Rafael Torres, ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. “This commander posed a serious threat to Afghan civilians and Afghan and coalition forces in Mota Khan district. We are happy he is off the streets and now unable to harm the people of Paktika province.”
Story here.
Michael Yon posted this on his Facebook page and I had to put this up on the blog. This story is straight out of China, and I have no clue what they were trying to do here. They certainly succeeded in giving us all a good chuckle. I don’t know if PETA has made a statement yet, but I certainly hope they will protest monkeys being used by the Taliban for war fighting. lol -Matt

Monkeys trained as battlefield killers in Afghanistan
July 09, 2010
Afghanistan’s Taliban insurgents are training monkeys to use weapons to attack American troops, according to a recent report by a British-based media agency.
Reporters from the media agency spotted and took photos of a few “monkey soldiers” holding AK-47 rifles and Bren light machine guns in the Waziristan tribal region near the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The report and photos have been widely spread by media agencies and Web sites across the world.
According to the report, American military experts call them “monkey terrorists.”
As a form of cruel political means, wars are launched to meet political goals through conquest, devastation, assaults and other means.
In a sense, the emergence of “monkey soldiers” is the result of asymmetrical warfare. The United States launched the war in Afghanistan using the world’s most advanced weapons such as highly-intelligent robots to detect bombs on roadsides and unmanned aerial vehicles to attack major Taliban targets. In response, the Taliban forces have tried any possible means and figured out a method to train monkeys as “replacement killers” against American troops.
This looks fun, but what really makes this unique is that this is a paragliding club in Mosul. I guess you could call this sport, ‘combat paragliding’. lol Either way, I think this is great and I certainly hope this catches on and becomes a popular sport there. -Matt

Paragliding Over Mosul – Because Iraq Just Isn’t Dangerous Enough Already

MOSUL, Iraq – The risk-averse will tell you that it takes a special sort of foolishness to jump from a mountain with just a paraglider strapped to your back.
So what, then, does that make the members of the Falcon Club, an Iraqi group of daredevils who sail through the air above Mosul, which is perhaps Iraq’s most dangerous city?
Holly Pickett for The New York Times Ahmed Assad prepares his parachute before paragliding with the group.
As if flying flimsy contraptions in a war zone was not enough, the Falcon Club faces the added danger of having been a favorite of Saddam Hussein – whose former friends and allies continue to be hunted down by Shiite militias and others.
Indeed, their recklessness leaves even the club’s members seeking a reasonable explanation.
“Flying is like a disease,” said Saba Yasin Fathi, 43, the club’s leader and a former Iraqi air force pilot who lost his left pinky finger to a propeller last year. “You do it once, you want to do it again and again.”
So the Falcon Club endures the suspicions of Iraqi soldiers at Mosul’s innumerable checkpoints who have never heard of a paraglider, have never seen a hot air balloon outside of an American movie and who believe — reasonably — that Iraq is dangerous enough without courting death.
