Publications: Destruction and Creation, by John R. Boyd

This paper rocks, and as you can see, is the basis for a lot of the ideas I talk about here on FJ.  From my social networking ideas, to shared reality, to leadership, to being a better contractor and person, to current military and business strategy.  It is pure Jundism and I highly recommend reading through it several times to grasp the concepts. If you want a foundation for the concept of OODA, then reading this is a must. Check out the influence of these ideas on warfare here, and I recommend expanding out to other sites that discuss these ideas for further learning and research. –Matt

From Wikipedia

Boyd never wrote a book on military strategy. The central works encompassing his theories on warfare consist of a several hundred slide presentation entitled Discourse on Winning & Losing and a short essay entitled Destruction & Creation (1976).

In Destruction & Creation, Boyd attempts to provide a philosophical foundation for his theories on warfare. In it he integrates Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem, Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle, and the Second Law of Thermodynamics to provide a context and rationale for the development of the OODA Loop.

Boyd inferred the following from each of these theories:

    * Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem: any logical model of reality is incomplete (and possibly inconsistent) and must be continuously refined/adapted in the face of new observations.

    * Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle: there is a limit on our ability to observe reality with accuracy.

    * Second Law of Thermodynamics: The entropy of any closed system always tends to increase, and thus the nature of any given system is continuously changing even as efforts are directed toward maintaining it in its original form.

From this set of considerations, Boyd concluded that to maintain an accurate or effective grasp of reality one must undergo a continuous cycle of interaction with the environment geared to assessing its constant changes. Boyd, though he was hardly the first to do so, then expanded Darwin’s theory of evolution, suggesting that natural selection applies not only in biological but also in social contexts (such as the survival of nations during war or businesses in free market competition). Integrating these two concepts, he stated that the decision cycle was the central mechanism of adaptation (in a social context) and that increasing one’s own rate and accuracy of assessment vis-a-vis one’s counterpart’s rate and accuracy of assessment provides a substantial advantage in war or other forms of competition.

DESTRUCTION AND CREATION

By John R. Boyd

September 3, 1976

To comprehend and cope with our environment we develop mental patterns or concepts of meaning. The purpose of this paper is to sketch out how we destroy and create these patterns to permit us to both shape and be shaped by a changing environment. In this sense, the discussion also literally shows why we cannot avoid this kind of activity if we intend to survive on our own terms. The activity is dialectic in nature generating both disorder and order that emerges as a changing and expanding universe of mental concepts matched to a changing and expanding universe of observed reality.

Industry Talk: Blackwater Changes It’s Name to ‘Xe’, Pronounced ‘Zee’

Ok, here is the scoop. I called Anne on the phone, and asked her directly about this story, and it is true.  The reason for the change was for ‘brand identity’. ‘Xe’ is definitely  different and this was voted on by the leadership at Blackwater.

I asked Anne if they had any other names they were playing with, and she could not comment at this time.

As for the meaning- Xe is the chemical element symbol for Xenon, a colorless, heavy, odorless noble gas. Xenon occurs in the Earth’s atmosphere in trace amounts.

Or maybe they are going for the greek general Xenon, or going off the greek meaning of the word Xenon ‘stranger’.  Either way, this is a very interesting choice of word or symbol.

And I have to say, the inside joke I see in all of this, and I do not know if it was intentional or not, is that the musician Prince changed his name to a symbol as well.  At least we can pronounce Xe.  LOL

They have also changed the name of their training site and it is now called US Training Inc. Interesting stuff. –Matt

APNewsBreak: Blackwater dumps tarnished brand name

By MIKE BAKER – 1 hour ago

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Blackwater Worldwide is abandoning its tarnished brand name as it tries to shake a reputation battered by oft-criticized work in Iraq, renaming its family of two dozen businesses under the name Xe.

The parent company’s new name is pronounced like the letter “z.” Blackwater Lodge & Training Center — the subsidiary that conducts much of the company’s overseas operations and domestic training — has been renamed U.S. Training Center Inc., the company said Friday.

The decision comes as part of an ongoing rebranding effort that grew more urgent following a September 2007 shooting in Iraq that left at least a dozen civilians dead. Blackwater president Gary Jackson said in a memo to employees the new name reflects the change in company focus away from the business of providing private security.

“The volume of changes over the past half-year have taken the company to an exciting place and we are now ready for two of the final, and most obvious changes,” Jackson said in the note.

In his memo, Jackson indicated the company was not interested in actively pursuing new private security contracts. Jackson and other Blackwater executives told The Associated Press last year it was shifting its focus away from such work to focus on training and providing logistics.

News: Blackwater Plans Shift From Security Business

I figured I would post this, because it is making the rounds out there.  I apologize for posting two Blackwater stories back to back, but this thing just popped up and deserves some attention.

I tend to think that Blackwater will do what it can to get the job done with their other companies like Greystone and Presidential Airways, and their partnerships with all sorts of little companies out there.  I do not see them getting out of the business of anything really.  I do see them shifting company responsibilities, and that is about it.  –Head Jundi

Blackwater plans shift from security business

MOYOCK, N.C. (AP) — Contractor Blackwater Worldwide plans a shift away from the private security business that brought it unwelcome attention following a deadly shooting in Baghdad last year.

Executives told The Associated Press Monday that the negative media coverage and intense government scrutiny has made the cost of doing business too high. They say the company has unfairly come to symbolize all Iraq contractors and thus is a flash point for those opposed to the war.

Blackwater contractors are under investigation for their involvement in a shooting in Baghdad in September that left 17 Iraqis dead.

Regardless of the outcome of that case, Blackwater executives say the company will survive with a focus on international training, aviation and construction.

News: Somali Pirates Find Booming Business

One of my readers sent me this story, and I thought it was pretty interesting.  This article gives a little hint as to the thought process that these pirates have out there and how they are profitting from their take downs.  -Head Jundi

Somali pirates find booming business
Draft U.N. resolution to give countries legal arsenal to nab high-seas thugs

The Associated Press
Wed., April. 23, 2008

NAIROBI, Kenya – The spoils of a career as a pirate off Somalia’s high seas were simply too good for Abdi Muse to pass up. He bought two Land Cruisers and a new home, then married two women in one passionate week.

“I was giving away money to everyone I met,” said Muse, 38, who said he made $90,000 hijacking ships. “After two months, I had no money left. Can you believe it?”

For years, Somali pirates like Muse have found lucrative work stalking the country’s lawless coast, seizing boats and negotiating ransoms. But these brazen assailants could soon face more force as the United States and France muster international support for taking them on.

“This is a very important and serious signal that the nations of the world take (piracy) seriously,” said Cmdr. Lydia Robertson, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Navy.

The United States has been leading international patrols to combat piracy along Somalia’s unruly 1,880-mile coast, the longest in Africa and near key shipping routes. Now, the U.S. and France are drafting a U.N. resolution that would allow countries to chase and arrest pirates after a spate of recent attacks, including a Spanish tuna boat hijacked this week by pirates firing rocket-propelled grenades and a Dubai-flagged cargo ship seized while carrying food to the desperately poor country.
