Al Qaeda: The Gitmo ‘Catch And Release’ Program

Overall, 14 percent of the more than 530 detainees transferred out of Guantanamo are confirmed or suspected to have been involved in terrorist activities since their release.

*****

This is as ridiculous as what we are doing with these Somali pirates when we catch them, which is release them. So what do you know! Piracy and terrorism is a kick as means of crime or waging war in today’s world.

To me, this is a prime example of non-state actors, utilizing their strategic advantage of ignoring or abusing the borders and laws of states, in order to achieve their goals. It works very well.

The question I have, is how do you defeat non-state actors?  Terrorists, pirates, organized crime, and drug cartels are all non-state actors…so how do you defeat them?

I have some ideas based on how societies and countries have dealt with these issues in the past, but I guarantee the ‘state’ really doesn’t want to hear it. Here is a hint. Laws like Article 1, Section 8 in the U.S. Constitution are in there for a reason. –Matt

Former Gitmo detainees help al-Qaida grow in Yemen

By MIKE MELIA and SARAH EL DEEB

Dec 31, 2009

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – As a prisoner at Guantanamo, Said Ali al-Shihri said he wanted freedom so he could go home to Saudi Arabia and work at his family’s furniture store.

Instead, al-Shihri, who was released in 2007 under the Bush administration, is now deputy leader of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, a group that has claimed responsibility for the Christmas Day attempted bomb attack on a Detroit-bound airliner.

His potential involvement in the terrorist plot has raised new opposition to releasing Guantanamo Bay inmates, complicating President Barack Obama’s pledge to close the military prison in Cuba. It also highlights the challenge of identifying the hard-core militants as the administration decides what to do with the remaining 198 prisoners.

Like other former Guantanamo detainees who have rejoined al-Qaida in Yemen, al-Shihri, 36, won his release despite jihadist credentials such as, in his case, urban warfare training in Afghanistan.

He later goaded the United States, saying Guantanamo only strengthened his anti-American convictions.

“By God, our imprisonment has only increased our persistence and adherence to our principles,” he said in a speech when al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula formed in Yemen in January 2009. It was included in a propaganda film for the group.

News: Mumbai Update and the Possible Geopolitical Consequences

Some are saying it is Indian Mujahadeen, and the Deccan Muj. could be a front.  Still no real confirmation on who was responsible.

127 people killed(figure still being updated)

three Americans have been injured(figure still being updated)

nine terrorists killed, one captured, one believed to be still fighting.(figure still being updated)

the terrorists came in by zodiac boats

fires still burning in hotels

Geopolitical assessment:  From what I can gather, the real fear here, is the reaction that India’s Congress will have to this latest attack.  The people will want blood, and everyone wants to put the blame on Pakistan for this.  So will India try to put the blame on Pakistan for this?  Or will they keep Pakistan out of this, and make this into an internal/local problem?  Politics could drive this towards a conflict with Pakistan, regardless if they were at fault or not.  Check this story out at Stratfor, and they talk about the same thing. –Head Jundi

News: Mufsid Strikes in Pakistan- DOD Employees Killed

A couple of things with this one.  I guess the street was only 30ft from the hotel itself, so this kind of attack was all dependent on the size of bomb.  And boy what a bomb.  It left a 24 ft deep, 59 ft wide crater!  That is big, and it looks like they packed the vehicle with all types of explosive and munitions–mines, artillery shells, RDX, mortars, etc.  The most interesting component of the bomb was the aluminum powder.  This was to add more of an incendiary effect, and torch the hotel.  And the succeeded.

If you watch this video, you will see that there was a minor explosion that took place  in the truck bomb, before the main explosive blew up.  It looks like the guards reacted to this more as an accident, and the resulting fire was treated as just some result of an accident.  Basically, draw in the emergency personnel, then detonate. Or it could be a screw up of the terrorists, but I kind of doubt it. No word on who the DOD employees belonged to, and my heart goes out to the families and friends during their time of loss.  –Head Jundi

DOD employees killed in Pakistan blast

September 21, 2008 13:46 EDT

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) — A U.S. Embassy spokesman in Pakistan says two Defense Department employees are among at least 53 people killed in the truck bombing at the Islamabad Marriott hotel yesterday.

He says a third American, a contractor for the State Department, is unaccounted for.

Three U.S. Embassy employees and an embassy contractor were injured.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but officials and experts say the scale of the blast and its high-profile target are the hallmarks of media-savvy al-Qaida.

News: Thirteen Bombs Hit India’s Ahmedabad, Five Killed

And speaking of the enemy,  it looks like this latest attack in India was another example of what they are capable of.  They killed innocent people in this attack, all for the sake of trying to disrupt world business.

This attack was engineered, not for massive casualties, but for disruption.  Everyone knows that most of the world’s IT services are located there in India.  It is the backbone of the offices of the world, so any attack that can disrupt India’s Silicon Valley is the goal. Certainly whatever group did this, their goal was to destabilize the region and I am sure they will find even more bombs.  Hopefully no one else gets killed.  –Head Jundi
