Books: The Dalton Fury Brouhaha

Boy, this is one hell of a debate.  Dalton Fury is the guy that wrote the book “Kill Bin Laden“. Dalton Fury is also a pseudonym of the real author’s name.  I will continue to use Dalton, out of respect(even though there are those that have found out his real name and posted it).  Dalton is also a former Delta Operator, which is at the source of this brouhaha, and the charge is that he broke the silence about something he should have stayed quite about.

Now when these guys write books, they have to do it the right way, or they can get in trouble.  There is a lot of stuff out there that they are privy too, and their Non-Disclosure Agreements they sign with the government are pretty stringent.  As to wether Dalton went through the proper channels I guess is up for debate and for the lawyers to decide.  I will let the reader make their own determinations on this.

But back to the reaction on the forums.  Dalton has pissed off a lot of guys.  The small community of special forces are very protective of their group, and I don’t blame them, and Dalton has exposed a piece of their history.  Now did he endanger lives or endanger national security with his book, I don’t know, and I plan on reading it to make my own determinations.

I do know that a few out there are supportive of what Dalton has done, and that he is questioning his superiors for their decisions about the failed mission to find and kill Osama Bin Laden in Afghanistan.  To me, I think this story does need to be told, if there is fault on the part of the upper command.  Dalton knew the risks of telling his story, and he is a real operator who has done his time out there.  Obviously he feels he has a story that needs to be told, and he has risked condemnation by his peers and of his command to tell it.  To me, that takes balls, and I give him credit for that. The proceeds of the book are going to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.

News: SOFA Update-Iraq Seeking Changes to US Deal

So I guess it has all come down to who has legal jurisdiction over the US Military/Contractors.  I for one am glad that finally, we are being lumped together in this agreement, and not separate.  The whole off duty thing I can buy into, because obviously you will have to be accountable for your actions in that situation.  But on duty, and in Iraq, there is plenty keeping us in line(UCMJ comes to mind).

Of course that is my opinion on the matter, and I hope the US negotiators don’t back down on this.  And of course Sadr is going to push this issue, because it helps him politically speaking to look like he is a champion of the Iraqi.  Or is he just being a champion of his supporters….?  Anyways, I hope this turns out well.  Inshallah. –Head Jundi

Iraq seeking changes to US deal

Tuesday, 21 October 2008

Iraq’s cabinet is demanding changes to a draft agreement with Washington that would allow US forces to stay until 2011, a government spokesman has said.

“The cabinet have agreed that necessary amendments to the pact could make it nationally accepted,” Ali Dabbagh said, without specifying the changes.

The draft was presented last week after months of painstaking US-Iraq talks.

US officials have not said if they are willing to renegotiate the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA).

The draft agreement calls for a drawdown of US combat forces from Iraq by the end of 2011 and includes US concessions on immunity for US troops who break Iraqi law.

Now this is a cool little blog.  It is called Soldier Systems, and it is a blog about the latest developments in equipment design for war fighting.  It is privately funded, and they cover all types of equipment and manufacturers.  I recommend reading through the archives and checking out some of the stuff that is floating around out there. And for any writers out there, they are looking for article submissions.  –Head Jundi

Training: Security Driving and Tony Scotti

I wanted to do a short deal about some training opportunities out there that are highly recommended in the industry.  As we all know, driving in war zones is one of the most dangerous things you can do out there.  So having a knowledge base about the do’s and don’ts of security driving is a great skill to have and to continue to work on in your career.  And if you want to get some excellent training, go do a course with Tony Scotti.

Personally, I have not gone to any of his schools, but everywhere I go for training, his name is mentioned as being the best for security driving instruction.  So to say his school is at the top of my list, is an understatement.

Another thing I want to mention is that driving training can be a hoot.  I did a course through ITG and it was amazingly fun and action packed.  It was also life saving, because those skills are what I used while driving in vehicles in Iraq.

So let me throw some links your way, and feel free to contact Tony if you have any questions.  I highly recommend reading through his blog and his books, because they are packed full of outstanding information about security driving.

I also wanted to mention that Tony will be putting on an Instructors Course in January 2009.  Check out the schedule below for other great courses. –Head Jundi

This blog, like the SecurityDriver.Com web site is for people who have an interest in cars – security – security driving – or driving in general. For over 35 years I have been working in the security driver training business. My bio will explain it all.

Although I have been around the driving – car – security business for a long time I am new at this Blog stuff. I hope everyone exhibits some patience. The blog will list recent vehicle ambushes, and talk about old ones. The blog will cover my opinion on most everything related to cars, driving, security, books, training and at 69 years old and after 35 years of in the business I do have an opinion on most everything. You may disagree with my opinions and that’s OK in fact, it’s good. The basic concept is to share information and open up a dialogue with those that have an interest in the same things I do.
