Military News: General McChrystal to Replace Top Commander in Afghanistan General McKiernan

Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the commander of the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) responsible for hunting al-Qaeda in Iraq, employed what he called “collaborative warfare,” using every tool available simultaneously, from signal intercepts to human intelligence and other methods, that allowed lightning-quick and sometimes concurrent operations.

Asked in an interview about the intelligence breakthroughs in Iraq, President Bush offered a simple answer: “JSOC is awesome.” – Bob Woodward

Crazy news and click on the link below for General McChrystal on Wikipedia, to read some more about him.  Also, Bob Woodward mentioned a quick deal about General McChrystal and the reduction of violence in Iraq during the surge.  –Matt

General McChrystal to Replace Top Commander in Afghanistan General McKiernan

May 12, 2009

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Defense Secretary Robert Gates has decided to replace the commander of US forces in Afghanistan, General David McKiernan, in a shake-up of the US military mission, a Pentagon official said on Monday.

Gates plans to name General Stanley McChrystal, a former commander of special operations who now serves as director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as the new commander, the official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP.

The move, to be announced later at a news conference at the Pentagon, suggested a lack of confidence in McKiernan, who has been on the job less than a year having taken over command in June last year.

Bounties: John Miller and the Race For Scarface’s Millions

“Pablo was earning so much that each year we’d write off ten per cent of the money because rats would eat it in storage or it would be damaged by water or lost.

“We had so much money we would spend as much as $2,500 on rubber bands just to hold it together. We’d holiday in Las Vegas, where we’d have dinner with Frank Sinatra, on petty cash.”

This story will be interesting to watch and I wish Mr. Miller and his crew all the luck with their mission to recover this money.  By the way, I have not read the book, nor do I know the locations of this stuff.  I guess if you want a shot at Scarface’s Millions, you will have to pick up a copy of this book and do some research.  Although it sounds like Mr. Miller’s team is pretty much at the lead for this race. –Matt

RACE FOR SCARFACE’S MILLIONS

DAILY STAR SUNDAY

ABOVE: Pablo Escobar, left

3rd May 2009

By Mike Parker

A DESPERATE race is on to find a fortune stashed in secret locations by dead drug baron Pablo Escobar.

And at least one team of British mercenaries is joining the hunt in the Colombian jungle.

It was triggered by astonishing claims over the whereabouts of Escobar’s evil earnings in a new book.

Escobar’s surviving brother, Roberto – a former cartel “accountant” – claims the drug baron left millions salted away in Swiss bank accounts.

The accounts were known only to Escobar – whose rise inspired the 1983 Al Pacino film Scarface – and the untold wealth deposited in them is likely to be lost forever.

But in his book Escobar: The Untold Story Of The World’s Most Powerful Criminal, Roberto tells how more cash was simply buried before Escobar died in a bloody shoot-out with troops and US drug agents in December 1993.

So far only $10million and an arsenal of weapons has been recovered from underground vaults at a sprawling complex called La Catedral, built in the jungle by Escobar.

Job Tips: Iron Key Secure Flash Drive

This is not only cool, but it is essential stuff for contracting.  And what I really like about this encrypted flash drive is that it self destructs.  So if you lose it, and someone picks it up and attempts to break into it, it will erase after tampering or ten attempts at a password. Not to mention that it is mil spec.

But if you are out there on contract, and your company loses their gig and you’re rolled over to another company or you hop on over to a better deal, having your important stuff stored on a device like this and ready to send is vital.  I would also save your documents on an encrypted email account like Hushmail or some other secure online service where you can store documents.  Have the stuff easy to get to, that is safely stored and secure, and in different places, can make the difference between getting a job or not when you are out on the road. –Matt

All encryption and password verification are performed in hardware, and it cannot be disabled by worms, viruses or other malware.

Secure & Private Web Browsing

IronKey drives come pre-configured with a portable version of Mozilla’s popular Firefox Web browser. All data, cookies, and Web history are maintained locally on the drive. The optional IronKey Secure Sessions service protects your privacy on the Web by triple-encrypting all of your Web surfing traffic, and provides secure DNS services to help assure that you are not visiting a spoofed website.

Funny Stuff: Sikh Police Want Ballistic Turban

To me, the really funny part of this is right now some defense contractor is doing the numbers on how such a thing could be made.  How would you like to be on the R and D team for this? So if this thing is a ballistic helmet of sorts, it will have to have a chin strap won’t it?  The big money will be making the pad upgrade kit and the NVG mount. lol. –Matt

Ballistic Turban

The restriction is frustrating for Sikh officers, says Kashmira Singh Mann.

Sikh police want ballistic turban

2009/05/08

Sikh police want bulletproof turbans to be developed so they can serve as firearms officers and deal with public order, a newly-formed body says.

The British Sikh Police Association says Sikh officers cannot currently do such jobs, as their religion prohibits removing turbans to wear helmets.

But the organisation’s chairman says he now intends to push for more research on suitable ballistic turban material.

The Home Office said each force needed to ensure religions were accommodated.

The British Sikh Police Association, set up last month to give Sikh officers across the UK an “officially recognised voice”, said it wanted its members to play a full role in the police.

‘Frustration’

Sgt Kashmira Singh Mann, chairman of the association, told the BBC News website bulletproof turbans would allow such officers to abide by religious traditions as well as participate in all areas of the police service.

“We are looking at the issue because it stops Sikh officers serving in all roles,” said the Thames Valley Police officer who is based in Slough, Berkshire.
