News: Marine Plans To File Slander Suit Against Murtha

I was pretty disappointed in Murtha back then when he said those things about the Marines during the Haditha deal.  That to me was not being ‘always faithful’ to the Marines or adhering to the concept of innocent until proven guilty.  For that, Murtha gets a big thumbs down from FJ and from this former Marine. –Head Jundi

Marine Plans To File Slander Suit Against Murtha

Sep 24, 2008

WASHINGTON, PA (KDKA) ? A local Marine cleared in the deaths of civilians in Iraq says Congressman John Murtha made public comments that were unproven, untrue and unfair.

Now, Lance Corporal Justin Sharratt is planning to file suit in federal court against Murtha on Thursday morning.

The suit accuses the congressman of slander and violating the Marine’s right to a fair trial and due process.

Sharratt was one of eight Marines charged after 24 Iraqi civilians were killed in Haditha. He was charged with three counts of unpremeditated murder.

It’s alleged in the lawsuit that before the outcome of the case, Congressman Murtha made slanderous comments.

Three years after the deaths, seven of eight Marines have been cleared, including Sharratt. There’s now a website, JustinSharratt.com, to let the world know that he has been cleared.

The eighth Marine is still waiting for his day in court.

KDKA contacted Murtha’s office for comment on this suit but there’s no word back from them yet.

Industry Talk: DOD Tests Contractors’ ID Cards

This is interesting.  It’s almost as if they are taking the Incident Qualification Card that I was talking about in another post, and trying to come up with something similar.  But really, this is the first time I have ever heard about this.  –Head Jundi

DOD tests contractors’ ID cards

The Army is testing a program that allows contractors to use an identification card approved by the Defense Department to gain access to the service’s facilities and computers.

The Army’s Materiel Command is running the Synchronized Pre-deployment and Operational Tracker program, known as SPOT, as a pilot project at Fort Belvoir, Va., in coordination with the nonprofit Federation for Identity and Cross-Credentialing Systems group — or FIXs — a vendor certified by that group, and others.

“The ultimate goal is to give us visibility to the contractors in the battlefield,” said Col. Archie Davis, a spokesman at the Army command. “This goes a long way to solving that problem.”

The project, which has been planned for several years, is one of the first in which DOD is participating in a federated identity management system with a private entity to verify identities for nongovernment personnel. The contractor ID cards are modeled after the federal employee identity cards developed under Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12.

Pakistan troops ‘repel US raid’

Pakistani troops have fired warning shots at two US helicopters forcing them back into Afghanistan, local Pakistani intelligence officials say.

The helicopters flew into the tribal North Waziristan region from Afghanistan’s Khost province at around midnight, the reports say.

Tensions have risen after an increase in US attacks targeting militants.

The incident comes amid mounting security fears after a militant bomb attack on the Islamabad Marriott hotel.

Pakistan’s army has said it will defend the country’s sovereignty and reserves the right to retaliate to any border violations.

The government has said it will take targeted action against the militants, promising raids in some “hotspots” near the border with Afghanistan.

Meanwhile in the city of Peshawar, Afghan consul Abdul Khaliq Farahi was kidnapped after six unidentified men ambushed his car, officials say. His driver died in the attack.

‘Firing in the air’

Last week Pakistani troops fired into the air to prevent US ground troops crossing the border into South Waziristan.
