Funny Stuff: Sikh Police Want Ballistic Turban

To me, the really funny part of this is right now some defense contractor is doing the numbers on how such a thing could be made.  How would you like to be on the R and D team for this? So if this thing is a ballistic helmet of sorts, it will have to have a chin strap won’t it?  The big money will be making the pad upgrade kit and the NVG mount. lol. –Matt

Ballistic Turban

The restriction is frustrating for Sikh officers, says Kashmira Singh Mann.

Sikh police want ballistic turban

2009/05/08

Sikh police want bulletproof turbans to be developed so they can serve as firearms officers and deal with public order, a newly-formed body says.

The British Sikh Police Association says Sikh officers cannot currently do such jobs, as their religion prohibits removing turbans to wear helmets.

But the organisation’s chairman says he now intends to push for more research on suitable ballistic turban material.

The Home Office said each force needed to ensure religions were accommodated.

The British Sikh Police Association, set up last month to give Sikh officers across the UK an “officially recognised voice”, said it wanted its members to play a full role in the police.

‘Frustration’

Sgt Kashmira Singh Mann, chairman of the association, told the BBC News website bulletproof turbans would allow such officers to abide by religious traditions as well as participate in all areas of the police service.

“We are looking at the issue because it stops Sikh officers serving in all roles,” said the Thames Valley Police officer who is based in Slough, Berkshire.

Late in 2001, our soldiers began operations in Afghanistan. The public saw the Taliban as terrorists who abused women and deserved any punishment they got. The invasion would avenge our dead, save Afghans from the Mullahs, and democratize a South Asian nation, all in one blow. I was worried by the ignorance of the general public, including myself. Worse, the Administration seemed no better informed than we were.

A lesson from Vietnam was that ignorance can fritter away a powerful army for nothing. The pentagon had intelligence and plans on the shelf for invading Iran and Iraq, but we had left Afghanistan to the Pakistanis after the Soviets departed in 1989. If we were being led by the blind, the least I could do was teach myself to see. I consumed information. I read the BBC and the New York Times. I read Steve Coll, Christopher Kremmer, Barnette Rubin, Abdul Rashid, Peter Hopkirk, Gary Schroen, Robin Moore (who is a simple soul), and more. The coasters and website use the stories of key players as a framework to present what I learned. They inform the public and protect furniture from discoloration.

Somewhere outside Kabul

Mullah Zaif, the former Taliban ambassador to Pakistan, says he is ‘addicted’ to his iPhone

I could not believe my eyes. We had arrived to interview Mullah Zaif, the Taliban’s former ambassador to Pakistan who is now under virtual house-arrest on the outskirts of Kabul, when he walked into the room, sat down on the couch and pulled out an iPhone.

A former member of the Taliban! An iPhone! How times have changed.

During Taliban rule, which ended when the US and its allies rolled in and took control of Kabul in 2001, the leadership had banned just about anything associated with modern technology.
