Industry Talk: Security Firms Hustle To Get Noticed In Kenya

Companies that specialise in one or select number of services have come up, intensifying competition with those that dominated before. KKLogit for example specialises in provision of cash-in-transit services, challenging industry leaders like G4S, Wells Fargo and BM Security Services.

I am always interested in PSC or PMC news in other parts of the world, so here is a story about the market in Kenya of all places. What is really neat about this particular story is the idea of the small companies competing and taking market share from the big companies. That these smaller companies are focusing on a particular niche, and marketing themselves as the best at that particular niche–like cash transits.  The larger companies might provide the same service, but maybe not at the same level of quality or cost as a small company can. The larger companies also might not have the support of the local populations, because they might seem like one of those evil ‘foreigner mega-corporations’ coming to take business from the little guy.

This also reminds me of classic Sun Tzu or military strategy where you attack weakness with strength. Another way to look at it is guerrilla warfare for business, and these smaller companies in Nairobi are figuring this out. That they may not be able to compete against a G4S type company directly, but they certainly can compete against G4S in a very specific market.  But that smaller company has to be able to prove that they are the better company for these specific deals.

And to be able to prove that they are the better company requires an excellent strategic communications plan, and quality control for services rendered. So with smaller companies that can more easily monitor all aspects of their business, and can be more personal online in places like Facebook, might have an advantage here.

A smaller business might also be more appealing to a client if they are opposed to supporting large foreign corporations.  So Walmart might sell watches, but if you can buy the same watch at the same price at a small mom and pop watch shop, that might have even more of a selection of watches than Walmart–then why support that foreign mega-corporation with your business? Or, if that mom and pop watch store is better able to connect with the local population than the mega-corporation, then that will help too. These are the kinds of ‘small guy versus the big guy’ communications and strategies a small company can do in a market like this.

Intense competition in the private security market is pushing service providers to turn to marketing and public relations to boost their visibility in the marketplace.
Previously, firms such as G4S Security, KK Security and Wells Fargo seldom bothered about publicity and often relied on walk-in clients and recommendation from their clients to net in new clients, especially corporate customers.
But competition from the top players and new entrants such as Senaca and more visible Brinks Security has forced a change in strategy and the market leaders are racing to grow and defend their marketshare.
As a result, the firms have set up or an in the process of setting up fully fledged communication departments as arsenal for market growth.

Job Tips: Tracking DoD Contract Announcements

Part of the trick with keeping up with contracts in this industry is to use resources that consolidate and make it easy to keep up.  So with this post, I wanted to give a heads up to those who like to track this stuff. DoD keeps a pretty good record that is easy to read and keep track of.  Although they do not have a RSS feed for these reports specifically, you can still bookmark it and check it out. It would even be cool if they put these out on Twitter as they were awarded? Anyway, you can sign up with their email subscription and have this stuff sent to your inbox.

So why is this a job tip?  Well if you are keen on a specific program that you have worked on in the past, and are waiting on whatever company is going to be awarded that contract, then it pays to follow this stuff. As soon as you find out who won these contracts, you can instantly contact a recruiter and ask to be put on their roster for that contract. Or you can just follow their vacancies and stand by for the job announcement.

The other great thing about this is that you can forward this information on to other contractors that you know are interested in a particular program, and hook them up with some good info. Who knows, the guy you help out now could be the PM that hires you for a gig in the future. That is the power of networking. –Matt

Logistics: KBR Awarded $500 Million LOGCAP For DoS BLS In Iraq

Ms. Sparky first posted about this and now it is official. I remember first posting about BLS last year, and there was some speculation on how this was to be done. The mission in Iraq for DoS will require a ton of security, and it will require a fair amount of logistical support. –Matt

KBR Awarded Major Task Order Under Logistics Civil Augmentation Program (LOGCAP) IV Contract in Iraq

KBR today announced it was awarded a task order by the U.S. Army Contracting Command under its current Logistics Civil Augmentation Program (LOGCAP) IV contract to execute the LOGCAP IV Post 2011 Base Life Support (BLS) requirements for the U.S. Department of State’s mission in Iraq. The task order is valued at over $500 million with a Period of Performance of one base year plus one option year. This award is KBR’s third task order under the LOGCAP IV contract.
KBR will provide support to U.S. Embassy staff in Baghdad and services at other diplomatic posts throughout Iraq. Services will include facilities and utilities management, fire fighting, food service, laundry, shuttle bus services, retail fuel, postal service and air field operations.

Military News: Military Retirement Is More Generous And Expensive Compared To Private Sector

Hat tip to Thomas Ricks over at Foreign Policy for pointing this one out. Data like this seems to be missed when we discuss the costs of a standing government army, versus the private industry.  So stuff like this really points out the differences between public and private.

I have yet to work in a company that had any security contractor retirees. Hell, I would be lucky to have a retirement package offered, and most gigs these days seem to be all independent contractor stuff. That is the reality of today’s ‘disposable workforce’. So for me, I just assemble my own retirement plan and continue put into it from the various contracts I work.  Sometimes I was lucky enough to work a contract with a 401K plan, but those were few and far between.

The government seems to be the only industry left that actually has folks that work 20 years or 30 years, and has retirees under that system. It is actually a pretty good deal and many retirees collect pensions and go on to work other jobs.

In the security contracting industry, you see a lot of retired military folks who do exactly that.  They collect a nice pension after working 20 years in the military, and then go on to be a private contractor and make even more money.  So I could understand why the Pentagon and today’s cash strapped US government is taking a second look at this system. You could also guess the reaction of guys in the military that would construe this study as a threat to their good deal. The question to ask is will the government modify the current military retirement system to match that of the federal government, and get a few more years of service out of their soldiers? Or will they succumb to the politics of the matter, and realize that a ton of military retirees and current soldiers vote.

Who knows, but I do know that the US government is in the process of making some adjustments to the budget and spending. So they are looking at all and any options of cutting costs, and the military is no exception.

The other thing I wanted to mention is that I certainly hope these statistics are factored into future cost benefit analysis between government military forces and private military forces.  There are so many costs to consider when maintaining a standing army during times of peace and war.  Not to mention that all of these retirees in the military are also drawing healthcare benefits, and the legacy costs of that must be equally as high.  I mean if a guy retires at age 40 give or take, and the average life expectancy of a human these days is around 75, then that can add up to a lot of money that tax payers will be paying over the course of that individual’s life.
