PMC 2.0: Biometric Security For Mobile Devices

     I am digging this, because if government or private industry wants to fully integrate mobile devices into their operations, security is paramount. Any means of either shutting down a device remotely or automatically if it is breached, stolen or lost, is a good idea.  I could also see a bio-button having application for other tools of this industry.

     For one, a bio-button could be used to control the fire control mechanism of a sidearm? Meaning if someone takes your weapon or god forbid you lost it, then it would not be capable of firing because it is outside of the range of the bio-button.  Just don’t lose the bio-button! lol You could also apply the bio-button concept to vehicles, safes, entry points, you name it. Although I would put a manual over ride on the button, just incase there is a problem or an attacker uses some kind of electronics frying weapon. Cyber warfare comes to mind with these kinds of devices as well, hence why it is so important to have a strategy within the organization to deal with these threats.

     One cool thing with losing the bio-button according to these guys, is that you can shut down everything remotely using a computer. The other handy feature is the button can be set up to vibrate if for chance, whatever you are tracking has gotten out of your range.  You could also use such a device for close protection, and have a specialist carrying the button and the principal having the mobile device.  Lot’s of uses for something like this. I could also see bio-buttons being integrated into every day items that we keep on us anyways.  A watch, a necklace, a ring, sunglasses, etc.  I look at a device like this as adding redundancy to your sensitive/valuable equipment management system. I don’t look at it as way to shirk personal responsibility towards managing your stuff, but it could definitely help.

    It can also help companies to ensure their stuff is being taken care of by their employees or contractors.  If the device can be shut down remotely, well then it can be monitored remotely as well.  A company can tell if an employee or contractor has that equipment within their reach or not, and this is just one more way of insuring accountability of that equipment.  Stuff to think about and this is definitely PMC 2.0 material. –Matt

Aviation: Drone Archer Weapons– The MBDA TiGER Tactical Grenade Extended Range

     This weapon sounds very cool, and it is a real life version of exactly what I was talking about in my ‘drone archer’ post.  With a UAV like this, you could give a platoon or squad some very interesting options on the battlefield.

     The first one that came to my mind, was the idea of taking advantage of these small little engagements with the enemy.  If you can keep an enemy machine gunner or whomever busy with return fire, you could have two or three drone archers flying TiGERs right on top of the guy in order to solve that problem.  Better yet, you could use these TiGERs up to two miles away and solve problems from strategically positioned drone archers with access to a ‘quiver team’ (truck load of TiGERs and support crew). These crews could also fly TiGERs up to the front line to feed the drone archers plenty of arrows to use.

     What I really liked though, was the guidance systems. Supposedly it has GPS guidance, and you can use the camera in the nose for more precise targeting or last minute changes to an attack.  That is crucial, because if your target is running or tries to fool the drone archer, the TiGER could be stopped last minute and then flown back up for another attempt at a kamikazi attack. With precision guidance and a ‘top down attack’ with a small one pound warhead, I would also say that collateral damage is minimized to the extreme.  That would make this a good COIN weapon. And hey, it still has a camera which makes it a standard UAV as well.

     Swarming these things is another option that would take some figuring out. If the company created a bunch of practice TiGERs, then military units could experiment in exercises about how best to use these things.  I really think some radical platoon and squad level tactics could evolve from the use of such a weapon. It is also cool that the company is putting some ‘elephant chisel’ mechanisms on the TiGER and I would be very interested if the feeds are encrypted or not.

     Finally, I would not be surprised if MBDA has a mobile application to integrate this drone with an iPhone or similar device. Tactical Life did mention that laptops or handhelds are being considered. That would put this weapon on the PMC 2.0 list. –Matt

PMC 2.0: If You Have A Company Website, You Should Have RSS For News And Jobs

Today I wanted to do a quick little post on something that caught my eye. Something that one of the companies did out there that makes sense and is PMC 2.0 worthy. EODT has just souped up their website by putting an RSS button for their company news. This simple act, has now allowed guys like me to put their company directly into my Google Reader (RSS reader) and stay up to date easily about what is going on with them.

Why is that a good thing? Well bloggers, journalists, etc. all have time constraints, and they all do things to save time in their research. There is such a massive amount of information out there, that any tools used to make that search easier is great. Most of my time spent blogging, is actually just reading and going through all that information out there. In order to process all of that stuff, I use tools to make it easy to pick out the good stuff. I use alerts from Google Search, group pages, newsletters sent by companies, forums, and most importantly, RSS readers like Google’s RSS reader.

So with that said, if you have a website for your company and you post news or jobs through that website, it would be highly advisable to set up RSS for your news and jobs. It will make your company more accessible to guys like me, and it will also make your company more accessible and utilitarian to potential customers.

This will also help out those in the industry that are looking for work or looking for information about your company. That might catch them just in time before they submit a resume somewhere else. It also helps your employees as another way for them to keep up to date on news and jobs.

If you are constantly sending out news through your feeds, you will actually create a readership for your company too. But that is only if you make it easy to get that news, and your content is actually good. If you have a blog for your company, that should have RSS as well. The newsletter works to, but RSS feeds that post news as it happens is better.

Forum owners would be wise to set up RSS as well. There are threads that bloggers and journalists like to follow, that are filled with vital information about a subject they are researching. By making it easy to follow a thread, you might see an increase of traffic to your forum, because now you have folks who will instantly jump to that thread when something pops up.

RSS is a great feature to have on your website, and I recommend that companies follow EODT’s lead and get up to speed. This is also nothing new and to me, companies that are not doing simple things like this, are behind the times. –Matt

RSS (most commonly expanded as Really Simple Syndication) is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format. An RSS document (which is called a “feed”, “web feed”, or “channel”) includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship. Web feeds benefit publishers by letting them syndicate content automatically. They benefit readers who want to subscribe to timely updates from favored websites or to aggregate feeds from many sites into one place. RSS feeds can be read using software called an “RSS reader”, “feed reader”, or “aggregator”, which can be web-based, desktop-based, or mobile-device-based. A standardized XML file format allows the information to be published once and viewed by many different programs. The user subscribes to a feed by entering into the reader the feed’s URI or by clicking an RSS icon in a web browser that initiates the subscription process. The RSS reader checks the user’s subscribed feeds regularly for new work, downloads any updates that it finds, and provides a user interface to monitor and read the feeds.

RSS formats are specified using XML, a generic specification for the creation of data formats. Although RSS formats have evolved from as early as March 1999, it was between 2005 and 2006 when RSS gained widespread use, and the icon was decided upon by several major Web browsers.

Paracargo: New Uses For UAV’s–The K-MAX Dropping LCLA Or JPADS Paracargo

     This is cool.  To be able to drop paracargo like this, would be a very interesting capability, and especially dropping JPADS.  The K-MAX is such a work horse as well, and can totally handle high elevations a lot better than others in it’s class.  So for unmanned cargo missions, this might be the helicopter/UAV we will see more of in the near future.

     Some other interesting uses for this helicopter, would be SPIE operations or moving around people with a long line. Although that would probably be for only special incidents where survival would depend on having a means of getting out of a spot quickly (medevacs, attacks, etc.), and manned helicopters are not available.  Weaponizing it would be cool too, and to have a dual use helicopter UAV for anything that pops up would be a nice little tool to have in the battlefield tool kit for a commander.

     Having a robotic cargo hauler like this, will probably inspire many innovative uses for the thing as troops utilize it on the battlefield.  Especially if they could harden up this bird a little to give it some more combat survivability. Kind of like the A 10 Warthog of UAV helicopters.  Interesting stuff. –Matt

K-Max Drops ‘Em in Cargo Demo

No sign yet of an RFP from the US Navy for umanned cargo resupply of Marine Corps units in Afghanistan, but team-mates Lockheed Martin and Kaman continue to develop the capability of their unmanned version of the K-Max external-lift helicopter. In late April, they demonstrated the ability to airdrop supplies, which would improve the helicopter’s survivability in combat zones.

The 11 drop tests from 300-400ft altitude used the US Army’s LCLA low-cost low-altitude parachute, a one-time-use aerodynamic decelerator that costs just $375 and can be used with loads up to 600lb, the team says. Loads were dropped from the K-Max’s four-hook carousel. Kaman says future tests could include the JPADS precision airdrop system, a GPS-guided steerable parachute that would allow loads to be dropped from higher altitudes and take advantage of the K-Max’s ability to lift 4,300lb to 15,000ft.

The airdrop tests were conducted with a safety pilot on board, but the K-Max operated unmanned during a cargo resupply demonstration for the Marine Corps earlier this year. Boeing’s A160T Hummingbird unmanned helicopter participated. Both teams are now waiting for an RFP from the Navy. Inside Defense, meanwhile, is reporting the Army is pushing for an unmanned cargo demonstration.

Strategy: ‘The Toyota Horde’ And More Hybrid Warfare Stuff

   I love papers like this, because these are the kind of deals that ruffle the feathers of Tankers and Armor fans, as well as status quo military thinkers. Thanks to Small Wars Journal for publishing it. Basically, William has presented some excellent low cost hybrid warfare concepts that should be of great interest to the military and PMC’s. It’s a different way of looking at armor and maneuver warfare as it applies to small countries and armies, and today’s wars.

   The concept revolves around using small pickups that are easily available throughout the world as a means to transport troops and really modern weaponry–like Javelins for example.  He goes into how Hezbollah fought the Israelis in 2006, and used that war as an example of the kind of fight that would benefit from the Toyota Horde idea.

   Especially if Hezbollah actually had better proficiency with their anti-tank weapons.  If they had actually trained with those weapons and got proficient before that battle, they could have easily upped the numbers of kills.  Javelins and other fire and forget weapons would have been a game changer and the Israelis would have really felt the sting. But just basic anti-tank gunnery skills would have really changed the dynamic.

   The pickup can also be used for the hard work of fortifying a region or prepping the battlefield, much like what Hezbollah did.  They planted IED’s all over the place, set up tank traps, built rocket hides, you name it.  Cheap local trucks, that can quickly transport people, bombs and tools all over the place, are all you need for that endeavor.  And with fortified regions, hybrid armies actually want to be attacked so they can suck in armored columns into their traps.  Then attacks on the logistics can be set up, as well as attacks on individual tanks and APC’s, all using the stuff that was planted.  Much like what Hezbollah did.

   The trucks can also disappear into the population.  Hell, you could use taxis as transports, and really blend into society.  If the trucks are attacked, a group like Hezbollah could kill some civilians, throw them in those trucks, film it and put it all on youtube and say the attacking force killed these innocents.  In essence, these local vehicle/military transports, are the ultimate tools for hybrid warfare and playing the propaganda game to your advantage.

   Now to put on my PMC hat.  Imagine contracting your services to a country, in order to build up regional fortifications and set up this Toyota Horde and Hezbollah style hybrid warfare concept?  It would be cheap, quick to get off the ground, and pretty effective if done correctly. You could also use the country’s current weapon systems to add to those regional fortifications, much like what William was talking about in his paper.  You could also use these ideas, if PMC’s ever had to fight other PMC’s in the coming future. (big if) Notice that the New Rules Of War fit nicely with this paper as well. Interesting stuff and maybe the ‘Somali technicals’ are the wave of the future? lol –Matt

The subject of this article is a broad technical and operational examination of how almost any country on earth can currently gain a viable level of military power by building on the enduring elements of combined arms warfare. These elements are enduring and appeared in the first twenty years of the twentieth century. It is further suggested that skillfully applied this type of capability may enable its user to confront and possibly defeat NATO type expeditionary forces.

A number of popular opinions about the future nature of warfare have created a substantially misleading impression that the skills and equipment required for formation level combined arms capability, such as that possessed by NATO during the cold war is no longer needed, because few potential enemies possess similar peer capability. Thus the object of the article is to show just how simply a peer or near-peer capability can be acquired, and maintained.

Contrary to popular belief, there are many examples of where military action by irregular forces has inflicted battlefield defeats on regular forces. The most famous are the Boer defeats of the British Army during “Black Week” in December 1899 and the Hussite Wars of the 15th Century, where irregular forces, using improvised barricades made of ox wagons (wagenburgs) were able to stand against and defeat the armoured knights of the Holy Roman Empire. In both cases each irregular force was able to generate conventional military force from fairly meager resources. There is nothing novel, new or even complex, in this approach. It is common, enduring and proven.
