Jobs: Close Protection Agent–NATO, OCONUS

     Interesting job and definitely plan on some traveling with this one. I am sure they will favor those guys that are multi-lingual, but they did not specify as such. They will offer you a three year contract if you pass the shooting and fitness tests, and all of the other tests and checks.

TITLE: Close Protection Agent

GRADE:  C.3

WORKING HOURS: Day and night time shift work (working/non working days)

1. SUMMARY

The mission of the Close Protection Unit (CPU) is to protect the Secretary General at NATO Headquarters or any other assigned location, armed or otherwise, as circumstances dictate. Members of the team are expected to stand ready at all times to ensure a secure environment for the Secretary General. This includes ensuring the Secretary General’s physical protection against all forms of actual or potential threats and taking the appropriate steps to provide protection in a crisis or when working under pressure.

The incumbent will work as part of a team working on a shift system carrying out close protection duties for the Secretary General of NATO. He/she will be answerable, through a Team Leader and a Deputy Head, to the Head of the Close Protection Unit (CPU).

2. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL

The incumbent must:

• have a good general education, equivalent to higher secondary level;

• have at least 5 years’ experience as a member of a security or police force

or a member nation close protection team, or equivalent;

• possess and be able to maintain recognised skills in carrying and using

weapons; he/she must be able to pass theoretical and practical police

training tests in pistol shooting;

• possess and be able to maintain the required physical and psychological

condition to enable him/her to intervene in emergency situations;

• be able to use a computer workstation (Software: Excel, Word and NATO

related software programmes);

• have well developed communication skills and a fluent oral and written

knowledge of one of the two official NATO languages and a good ability to

express him/herself in the other;

• be able to travel as required by the Secretary General’s schedule.

DESIRABLE

The following would be considered an advantage:

• A first-aid certificate

• Knowledge of basic fire-fighting measures

• Advanced driving skills

• Advanced close protection tactical skills

• Knowledge of a third or forth language

• Knowledge of tactical shooting

3. MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES

Planning and Execution

Carry out protection duties for the Secretary General in accordance with the relevant instructions. Provide protection for the Secretary General against any attack during his official and private travel, alone or accompanied by guests, and for any other VIP designated by the NOS. Drive the Secretary General’s escort vehicle and, when required, his official and his personal car. Ensure the Secretary General’s physical protection against all forms of threats. This protection can extend to the use of force and defensive weapons, in compliance with the applicable legislation. Take the appropriate steps to provide protection in a crisis or when working under pressure.

Stakeholder Management

Deal tactfully, politely and discreetly with members of the Secretary General’s entourage and be above reproach as regards appearance and dress.

Expertise Development

Follow training courses organised by the Close Protection Unit, including physical and tactical training and weapon handling. Should the current means of defence be changed, he/she will be bound to follow any training courses that are offered.

Perform any other related tasks according to developments in equipment, missions and new techniques.

Information Management

Carry out administrative duties related to close protection.

Perform any other related duty as assigned.

4. INTERRELATIONSHIPS

The incumbent reports to a Team Leader, to the Deputy Head and to the Head, Close Protection Unit as circumstances dictate. He/she will have considerable contact with the Secretary General and his entourage as well as their staffs, official

visitors and guests.

6. CONTRACT

This is a post which is reserved for staff currently serving as agents within the Headquarters Security Force and staff seconded from a Close Protection Unit of a member nation’s security service.  The successful applicant will be offered an initial contract of three years’ duration, which may be followed by an indefinite duration contract.  Successful applicants who are seconded from a national administration, public administration or the armed forces of a NATO member state will be offered a three year definite duration contract which, subject also to the agreement of the

national authority concerned, may be renewed for a further period of up to three years. The maximum period of service in one of these posts as a seconded staff member is six years.

Seconded staff members who terminate their secondment, for example by resigning from the national administration concerned, and for whom it is decided to offer a continuation of their appointment, will be offered an initial contract covering the remaining period necessary to bring the length of service to three years, on completion of which they can be considered for an indefinite duration contract.

Those with more than three years’ service will be offered an indefinite duration contract. Continuation of employment in the Close Protection Unit is subject to fulfilling, and continuing to fulfill, the requirements of the job, as reflected in the vacancy notice.  These include the obligation to possess, and to be able to maintain, the required physical and psychological condition to intervene in emergency situations. Incumbents of these positions will be required to pass regular tests (updated as necessary), in particular physical, medical, psychological and shooting tests, and to

meet performance criteria established under the Performance Review and Development system.  If they no longer fulfill the requirements of the job they will be required to transfer to another post outside of the CPU, normally by returning to a post at the C3 grade and salary level in the HQ Security Force. NOTE: Medical, physical, shooting and psychological tests, which are all eliminatory, form an integral part of the pre-selection procedure. This will be followed by written

and language tests and interviews. Selected candidates will also be required to pass the appropriate physical and shooting tests on a yearly basis. The medical, physical and shooting tests are scheduled for the week of 10 to 14 January 2011.
