Industry Talk: State Department Dismisses EODT From The Kabul Embassy Contract
This actually came out on the forums a couple days back. Supposedly everyone that was slated for this contract is now being redirected to other places, like Iraq. Although that is just rumor from the forums. Perhaps if anyone from EODT would like to comment or correct the record on this, feel free to say so in the comments section or send me an email.
AGNA is also hanging on to this sucker for a bit longer. I am sure the guys working for them right now have been going through a roller coaster of emotions as to how long the contract will last and who will they work for next? These transition periods can be very aggravating to say the least. –Matt

The State Department has fired the contractor it hired to guard the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, leaving protection of the key diplomatic outpost in the hands of another company the department has been trying to replace for more than a year.

This page is all about advertising here on the blog. The reason why I am going this route is that I continue to get emails from folks who are interested in advertising, and now I think is a good time to allow that.
To the right is the Ad Center widget and in it will go all 125 x 125 ads. So if you want to promote something on the blog, that is the place. I am not interested in selling ad space in the footers or elsewhere at this time.

Disaster Response: The Radiation Network
This is cool. The Radiation Network is a crowd based and privately run radiation monitoring system that is free for everyone to check out. Each yellow disk on the map indicates a reading. The map is updated every minute by it’s network members. So with the news in Japan in regards to their nuclear disaster, a site like this will be able show exactly the impact on the US in the West Coast.
Now what would really be cool is to turn this into a mobile application? hint hint. I bet a radiation network mobile app would get thousands of downloads through iTunes. We will probably see other networks pop up, or even a group like Google might get in on the action and help the Radiation Network soup up their product?
Also, I expect the number of citizen monitors to increase, just because this nuclear disaster in Japan is causing folks to buy up detectors and everything else dealing with radiation monitoring. But a word of caution–because this is a crowd based deal, it is very difficult to insure that quality readings are being done.
All in all though, I think this is a great resource, and in the coming days and weeks and months of this nuclear disaster, we will see the global impact of the event. (from what I understand, a global network version is being fired up, and the network is expanding internationally) Bravo to Tim Flanegin and his crew for putting this resource together, and I just hope his host’s servers can handle the traffic. –Matt

Somalia: Puntland Suspends Contract With Saracen International Due To UN And US Pressure
This was to be expected. What I would be interested in is what kind of sweet deal or alternative did the US or UN offer, to get Puntland to suspend this contract? Also this was ‘suspend’ and not canceled, which is equally significant. Perhaps some kind of military mission through AFRICOM is the alternative? –Matt

Somalia’s northern region of Puntland has suspended a controversial deal with a private security firm contracted to train an anti-piracy force, two government officials said Thursday.
Saracen International was hired to train 1,050 men in Puntland to battle the pirates that menace shipping off Somalia’s coast.
