Ransom Negotiation Experts Say Kidnapped Contractors’ Survival Chances Were ‘Slim to None’

March 25, 2008—

The remains of three American contractors kidnapped in southern Iraq have been recovered, according to U.S. officials, confirming ransom negotiation experts’ predictions that the contractors were executed.

“Their chances of survival were slim to none because we were not hearing from the kidnappers,” said Jack Cloonan, a former FBI agent, who now heads a crisis management firm that has handled ransom negotiations in Iraq.

“We are seeing captured U.S. citizens used for retribution and propaganda,” he said. “There is a way to successfully negotiate a kidnapping in Iraq, but when it involves an American citizen, particularly a security contractor or a member of the military, political retribution trumps kidnapping for ransom and the end game is not a pay-off.” (more…)

Training: International UXO Program, Texas

Here is an idea for the job seeker out there.  In the past, I have worked with a few guys that have gone through this training and really made it work for them. This type of work will take you all over the world, cleaning up munitions in war zones or old military ranges. It can be quite profitable as well. The UXO guys I worked with were in Iraq, and I got to see first hand what their job entailed. It is tough work, but interesting, because you get to treasure hunt for cool old bombs and muntions and blow them up. On the downside is that it can be dangerous, obviously. But on the upside, you get paid six figures(in war zones) and are saving lives by getting rid of those munitions.(keeping it out of the hands of the enemy, and protecting the locals from accidents) (more…)

Gear Review: Woolrich Elite LWO Pants

Woolrich Elite LWO Pants
Well, I just bought a pair of these, and plan on putting them through the paces.  My first impression is that they are built pretty well and are very comfortable.  They did not give me a pair with tan retaining elastic on the lower leg pockets, and mine are black.(in the photo above, they are tan)  The material is a soft, lightweight cotton poplin type.(like the Sigtac Shirts, if you have ever seen those)  I don’t know how long these will last, but they seem to be a lot more functional than 5.11’s .  I would classify them as the best that Army style ACU’s offer, crossed with a 5.11 style pants.  I bought mine at Botach Tactical and I was happy with their service on this order. If anyone has used these out in the field, I would love to hear what you think? (more…)
