News: The Blimps of Blackwater

Along the lines of my last post about surveillance platforms, this is another interesting development.  UAV blimps.  They are cheaper to run, and can stay up in the sky a long time.  The problem I see, is why wouldn’t the enemy just shoot the thing out of the sky?  Nothing like a big slow lumbering white target in the sky to shoot at.  I would guess that they are planning on operating these things pretty high up, in order to get out of at least small arms range.

I would also hate to have these things get swooped up in some surprise sand storm like we get all the time in Iraq and Afghanistan.  But I do think these would be a good hit for some of the areas we operate in.

The most interesting comment in this article, was about AFRICOM and Blackwater setting up aviation shop there.  Prince is right.  Africa has terrible roads, and lots of them.  As we become more involved with Africa, UAVs watching the flight paths of these passenger aircraft will be vital.  And with more aviation work, comes more potential SAR operations.  Blackwater and their aviation company Presidential Airways has definitely acquired some interesting aircraft.  –Head Jundi

Blackwater expands its fleet of airships

By Michael Hoffman – Staff writer

Blackwater Worldwide is building up its own Air Force.

Airmen might soon find Blackwater blimps patrolling Iraq and Afghanistan skies in addition to its helicopter and light transport aircraft already flying thousands of missions in theater.

According to Blackwater Worldwide CEO Erik Prince, eight Blackwater CASA 212 light transport aircraft flew 11,000 sorties in Afghanistan last year supporting 38 combat outposts over 19,000 square miles. Its aircraft transported more than 40,000 personnel and 9.5 million pounds of supplies last year.

“We moved about 40,000 passengers, and our total costs, our total invoice for that mission is about what the U.S. Air Force is paying for one new C-27,” he said.

“So the idea of outsourcing versus having government do it, that’s a pretty simple math question for me.”

Prince, who sat down July 7 for a rare, exclusive interview with Military Times editors and reporters, said he isn’t looking to replace the Air Force — simply fill a void where his company is needed.

“I think there’s a gap,” Prince said. “The C-130 is a great aircraft, but the older ones are getting pretty worn out and the C-130Js are coming online, but that’s a very expensive airplane.”

Industry Talk: Blackwater and Raytheon Join Forces For Grizzly Vehicle

Interesting partnership.  I have yet to check this vehicle out in the field, and most of my experience is with older armored vehicles like the Mamba.  I look forward to what the market can produce.  And when it comes to vehicles like this, I like the words ‘fast and safe’ in the same sentence.  Now if they can put ‘fuel efficient’ in that sentence, now we are talking.  On a side note, the true test is the air conditioning unit and how dependable that will be.  If any of the engineers are reading this, it better be ice cold….I mean sweater weather in that thing.  LOL. -Head Jundi

Blackwater USA and Raytheon unveiled a prototype six-passenger Joint Light Tactical Vehicle at the U.S. Special Operations Industry Conference in Tampa, Fla., on May 21, revealing their teamed-up effort to build a survivable, mobile next-generation Humvee.

The Raytheon-Blackwater JLTV Grizzly MK VII. (Blackwater USA photo) “Our vehicle will go faster and carry more weight safely than any other JLTV,” said Blackwater USA Vice President Bill Mathews. “With Raytheon being the integrator for so many ground vehicles for C4ISR, our JLTV will have the technological equivalent of an F-18 cockpit.”

The Blackwater-Raytheon partnership aims to combine the fast, off-road vehicle expertise with the systems integration and C4ISR abilities of Raytheon. (more…)

News: State Department Renews Contract with Blackwater

It looks like Blackwater is coming out on top, and good for them.  Too much has been focused on all the negative that BW has done, and all the positive gets lost in the shuffle.  No one talks about all the successful missions BW has completed for the State Dept., in regards to protecting diplomats in Iraq.  Or the fact that BW has lost a few employees, in defense of those diplomats.  -Head Jundi

Iraq Contractor in Shooting Case Makes Comeback
By JAMES RISEN
WASHINGTON — Last fall, Blackwater Worldwide was in deep peril.

Guards for the security company were involved in a shooting in September that left at least 17 Iraqis dead at a Baghdad intersection. Outrage over the killings prompted the Iraqi government to demand Blackwater’s ouster from the country, and led to a criminal investigation by the F.B.I., a series of internal investigations by the State Department and the Pentagon, and high-profile Congressional hearings.

But after an intense public and private lobbying campaign, Blackwater appears to be back to business as usual. (more…)

News: 100 Mile-Per-Hour Battle-Buggie Competition

Boy, with this mad dash to produce a product, I think it would be fun to see one of the shows on  Horse Power TV(Spike Network) produce a prototype.  Blackwater has a vehicle that they are going to throw into the ring, and this should be interesting to see who wins this. –Head Jundi

Army Eyes 100 Mile-Per-Hour Battle-Buggies

The U.S. military is looking for light, high-speed four-wheelers that can zip troops around battlezones.  And just about every major player in the defense industry — including Blackwater — is lining up to supply the vehicles.

Military vehicles have generally gotten heavier in recent years, to protect troops from roadside bombs and other threats.  “The latest Humvee model, the M1151, weighs in at more than 5 tons, twice the weight of the original, unarmored M998,” GovExec.com notes. “The military’s new ‘Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected’ vehicle program is awarding contracts to build wheeled transports as heavy as 40 tons.”

Dean Lockwood, a Forecast International analyst, tells Defense News, “With the way they have up-armored the Humvees, they are too heavy to do many of the missions they were originally intended to do.” Moreover, he said, up-armored Humvees strain Army helicopters.

So “the U.S. Army, Marine Corps and Special Operations Command may order thousands of rugged, high-tech, high-speed vehicles that can climb mountains, rescue fallen comrades and lead quick-strike assault teams in combat,” Defense News’ Kris Osborn reports.  “Service officials are eyeing prototypes and early versions of several existing vehicles, including ones that can hit 100 mph on roads. [Army] engineers are also exploring individual technologies that may give vehicles the suspension to handle rigorous terrain at high speed.” (more…)

Funny Stuff: Flight Attendant for Blackwater

I thought that this was funny.  Who would have thought, that Blackwater would be recruiting for flight attendants one day?  Strange world, and this definitely qualifies as Feral Jundi stuff.  Somehow I have this vision of a beautiful young gal in a sexy uniform, walking down the isle of a plane, holding a basket of warm towels and packing a Kimber Custom .45 on her tiny waist.  I love it. -Head Jundi
