Legal News: Boss Who Sold Bomb Detectors To Iraq Arrested Over Fraud

Boy, this gets me fired up. This guy sold fake bomb detectors to Iraq, and wins the Bernie Madoff award for fraud for this year.  I would like to see this guy do hard time in an Iraqi prison, along with the dorks in the Iraqi military who bought off on this thing.

What is most disturbing is that the US DoS and DoD had put out memos warning against such devices, and I am sure they were screaming at Iraq to reconsider.  I just don’t understand how a few leaders in the Iraqi military could be so dumb as to buy off on this thing. I am sure someone was getting paid to look the other way.

Or how the Iraqi’s disgust for dogs (bomb sniffing dogs), prevents them from doing the life saving deed of actually using such an animal. Dogs work, as does actually searching vehicles or paying for xray machines that scan vehicles.  But magic wands?  Oh hell no.

And now hundreds of Iraqis and many coalition forces and contractors have been killed or wounded, because some Iraqi check point used this crap and let slip suicide bombers and VBIEDs into target areas. –Matt

Boss who sold bomb detectors to Iraq arrested over fraud

Friday 22 January 2010

The managing director of a British company that has been selling bomb-detecting equipment to security forces in Iraq was arrested on suspicion of fraud today.

At the same time, the British government announced that it was imposing a ban on the export of the ADE-651 detectors because it was concerned they could put the lives of British forces or other friendly forces at risk.

The government promised to help investigate the multimillion-pound deal between the company, ATSC, and the security forces in Iraq.

Iraq has invested more than £50m in buying the devices and training people to use them. Police and military personnel have used them to search vehicles and pedestrians for explosives. But concerns over their effectiveness – and fears they could put lives at risk – have been raised.

Technology: The Drone Wars

This is a good briefing on where we are at politically and strategically with the use of drones. –Matt

The Drone Wars

January 9, 2010

Weapons like the Predator kill far fewer civilians.

The Obama Administration has with good reason taken flak for its approach to terrorism since the Christmas Day near-bombing over Detroit. So permit us to laud an antiterror success in the Commander in Chief’s first year in office.

Though you won’t hear him brag about it, President Obama has embraced and ramped up the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones. As tactic and as a technology, drones are one of the main U.S. advantages that have emerged from this long war. (IEDs are one of the enemy’s.) Yet their use isn’t without controversy, and it took nerve for the White House to approve some 50 strikes last year, exceeding the total in the last three years of the Bush Administration.

From Pakistan to Yemen, Islamic terrorists now fear the Predator and its cousin, the better-armed Reaper. So do critics on the left in the academy, media and United Nations; they’re calling drones an unaccountable tool of “targeted assassination” that inflames anti-American passions and kills civilians. At some point, the President may have to defend the drone campaign on military and legal grounds.

Iraq: Iraq Confiscates Arms In Private Security Crackdown

I am not sure what companies they did this too, and if readers have any further info, feel free to fill in the blanks.  I certainly hope that those that are no longer armed, are able to leave safely or get on a base to get some kind of protection. –Matt

Iraq confiscates arms in private security crackdown

09 Jan 2010

By Khalid al-Ansary

BAGHDAD, Jan 9 (Reuters) – Security forces confiscated hundreds of rifles, thousands of rounds of ammunition and other military gear in a crackdown on private security contractors in Iraq, officials said on Saturday.

Police raided three locations in Baghdad on Friday, a week after Iraqi authorities were incensed by a U.S. judge’s decision to throw out charges against five Blackwater Worldwide security guards accused of killing over a dozen Iraqi civilians in 2007.

Officials said they are targeting private security companies that are no longer legally licensed to operate in Iraq.

“All those companies with their work permits expired are not allowed to move one metre inside Baghdad, or own one piece of weaponry,” Baghdad security spokesman Qassim al-Moussawi said.

He would not reveal how many unlicensed contractors were on the target list, or their names.

Authorities raided the headquarters of a foreign security contractor, whose name could not be immediately confirmed, on Friday night and confiscated 20,000 rounds of ammunition and more than 300 armoured shields.

In another location they found 400 rifles, helmets, radio devices and more than 35 vehicles believed to belong to the same company, officials said. No one was arrested.
