Leadership: Amid Reviews, DynCorp Bolsters Ethics Practices

     Glad to see DynCorp taking these steps and I hope they make good with their promise of ‘strengthening it’s ethics programs’.  But what DynCorp really needs to focus on, is insuring they hire the right folks into positions of management.  The quality of leadership out there is what will make or break your company out there.  Some ethics program manager posted in a nice comfortable office at headquarters will not be an effective tool for monitoring your management.

     It is a nice visual step, but the focus needs to be on the folks that will implement your ethics policies in the first place–the leaders.  And if your high paid managers suck, then get rid of them.  Matter of fact, get rid of the regional manager in charge of that guy as well, because obviously he didn’t care enough about company policy or doing things right to keep things in check. Remember the Sun Tzu and the 360 Concubines story I posted?  Well have the courage to do what is right, and get rid of your poor managers with authority.

    Send the message to your leadership that you demand excellence, and the rest will follow. You actually have to care about what is happening out in the field, dedicate the necessary resources to monitor what is going on out in the field, and correct things as quickly as possible.

Sun Tzu and His Army of 360 Concubines

     The king of Wu tested Sun’s skills by commanding him to train a harem of 360 concubines into soldiers. Sun divided them into two companies, appointing the two concubines most favored by the king as the company commanders. When Sun first ordered the concubines to face right, they giggled. In response, Sun said that the general, in this case himself, was responsible for ensuring that soldiers understood the commands given to them. Then, he reiterated the command, and again the concubines giggled. Sun then ordered the execution of the king’s two favored concubines, to the king’s protests. He explained that if the general’s soldiers understood their commands but did not obey, it was the fault of the officers. Sun also said that once a general was appointed, it was their duty to carry out their mission, even if the king protested. After both concubines were killed, new officers were chosen to replace them. Afterward, both companies performed their maneuvers flawlessly.

   Sima’s biography claims that Sun later proved on the battlefield that his theories were effective, that he had a successful military career, and that he wrote The Art of War based on his tested expertise. His descendant, Sun Bin, also became a famous scholar of the military arts.

Leadership: Leadership, Petraeus Style

   This is a new category for FJ, and I figured leadership deserves it’s own category at the least.  I was tempted to put adaptive leadership up on the board under Jundism, but I think I want to let the stuff incubate in the old thought machine  for a little longer before I do that.  A lot of this stuff is just re-worked concepts with a different title, but I will give it some thought.  I love it all though, and whatever Petraeus is doing, is definitely worth emulating. By the way, I have outlined the paragraphs that caught my eye, and see if you can see a pattern here with what we have been hitting on here at FJ? –Matt

WITH A FALTERING economy, soaring unemployment, and overseas military commitments consuming more each day than the gross domestic product of many small nations, the United States urgently needs adaptive and transformational leaders. In paying tribute to Harvard veterans at a Kennedy School Forum tonight, General David H. Petraeus will underline the importance of adaptive leaders in today’s complex national security environment.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has called Petraeus the “preeminent soldier, scholar, and statesman” of his generation – roles that he transitions among as the commander of US Central Command.

Cool Stuff: Jundism

     That’s right, Jundism.  Pretty cool huh?  Check out the pages section labeled ‘Jundism’ to the right, and you will see what I am talking about.  These are just my thoughts on business, leadership, contracting, etc. and the list will probably grow over time.  Or not, and maybe it will become more boiled down and refined?  Jundism is constantly evolving, and certainly a work in progress, much like Boyd promoted with his ideas. Although unlike Boyd, I plan on keeping a record here on FJ. I am also taking suggestions, because for some of the readers, you probably see a pattern in philosophy here that I might not be seeing. –Matt

Training: Is Your Company ‘National Incident Management System’ Ready?

   Ok gang, this is an important one, and I am hoping that any company reps that might read this, actually pay attention.  Here at Feral Jundi, I have been talking my head off about the importance of the Incident Command System, and why we should be getting ICS smart.  Well this little deal below is one reason, in my list of reasons for going this route.  If a company is used in a disaster zone or some national security deal, and they are not up to speed on NIMS, then they will certainly be behind the power curve.  And seeing how all the federal, state, and local groups have been given the orders of ‘one mission, one team, one fight’ since 2004, we need to catch up in the private industry if we want to integrate well into that effort.

   In the Fire Services, all federal/state/local/private industry groups were required to be up to speed on Incident Command.  It is actually part of the fire refresher training each year.  But notice how I tacked on ‘private industry’, because fire contractors all had to be able to integrate well on an incident.  They had to have radios, the fire equipment, a red card stating that they were qualified, and they needed to know who and what an Incident Commander was on a fire.  ICS was a necessary bit of knowledge, if a contractor wanted to play with others on fires. 

    Even if your company does not take the time to learn this stuff or train it’s employees, you as the security specialist could definitely take it upon yourself to learn.  If you have questions about Incident Command and how it works, just do a Google or Feral Jundi Search. Or you could just ask me and I will be more than happy to fill in the blanks.  I also think the attacks in Mumbai, are certainly an indicator that we must get organized when it comes to managing chaotic environments.  During that attack, there was no Incident Management and really no leadership bringing everyone under such a system.  The result was chaos and casualties, with extreme blame on the government for not doing enough to deal with such a thing.  Things to think about…-Matt

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge today announced approval of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) (PDF, 152 pages – 7.6MB) the Nation’s first standardized management plan that creates a unified structure for Federal, state, and local lines of government for incident response.  “NIMS gives all of our Nation’s responders the same framework for incident management and fully puts into practice the concept of, ‘One mission, one team, one fight,'” Ridge said.
