Iraq: Iraq Hails Second Oil Auction, But Risky Sites Shunned

Even Gharraf’s winners appeared concerned despite its location in the relatively calm south.

“It depends on the security situation,” Katsuo Suzuki, Japex’s vice president, said when asked when the companies would begin work. “We are in contact with several security companies to discuss the security situations and analyze carefully the situation to decide our program.”

“In contact with several security companies?”  Interesting news out of Iraq, and it is only logical that the next step in these deals is to evaluate how to properly secure operations there.  These companies want to succeed in their oil ventures, and you can bet that they will be seeking the best security companies out there that will insure that success.

That means protecting the fields, the equipment, the employees, and the executives and engineers for these projects.  So you can guarantee that security will be partially coming from Iraqi companies and locals, and with a small contingent of security coming from highly skilled expats.  That is my guess, and it only stands to reason.

Now one security company that might stand to benefit from this latest deal, is Oryol.  It would make sense that Lukoil would use a Russian security company for protective details.  I have no clue who Japex would use, and maybe some of the oil security pros out there can help to fill in the blanks. Of course there is the Oil Police down south, but companies will also want their own security that they can control and trust.  Either way, good on Iraq for getting this going, and the money earned from these deals will certainly help in the reconstruction of this war torn country. –Matt

Oil executives gird for work in risky Iraq

* Global firms arrive in Baghdad for oil auction

* Security still a major concern for oil work in Iraq

By Missy Ryan

BAGHDAD, Dec 14 (Reuters) – They sped into the Oil Ministry in armoured convoys, flanked by muscled guards and men in dark suits, but oil executives marked a milestone this week when they attended an oil auction outside Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone.

It was a measure of a broad improvement in Iraq’s security that executives from 35 global oil firms came for the ministry’s two-day bid round in downtown Baghdad, where the landscape is scarred by six years of suicide bombs and other bloody attacks.

Company Spotlight: Oryol

This is a continuation of the video I posted earlier about this company.  This kind of reminds of another article I wrote in regards to PMC versus PMC. Not in the way of Blackwater fighting Oryol on the battlefield, but in the way of competing with them on the battlefield of market share. That the German Landsknecht defeated the Swiss Guard back during the Italian wars, by copying the Swiss (all the way down to the uniforms), being cheaper than the Swiss (thus gaining more experience with more jobs), and finding an innovation that gave them an edge over the Swiss (firearms).

In this case, this company wants to take market share in Iraq by doing a better job of the task than the top British and American companies. Competition is what drives innovation, and these guys sound hungry. Although I will have to say that they will have to work very hard to find the one or two innovations that will make them competitive in this market.  They are dealing with some very advanced and successful companies in this industry, and Oryol will definitely have to find a niche to get a seat at the table. –Matt

Former Russian soldiers ready to take on Blackwater in Iraq

06 October, 2009, 19:50

A group of former Russian soldiers is involved in an intense military training program in preparation for Iraq. They believe they can compete with their British and American counterparts by adopting a unique approach.

The training of the Oryol anti-terror centre may seem like an intense action scene from a Hollywood blockbuster movie, but in fact it is to prepare Russian men to work in Iraq…

“Before we send people there, we put them through some serious training. This includes psychological training and an educational program,” says Sergey Epishkin, head of Oryol anti-terror training centre. “In our classes, we even speak the way they speak in this particular region. If you can’t master local slang, you can run into a serious trouble sometimes.”

And to avoid such trouble is the chief responsibility of this group. These men are from the anti-terror group Oryol and, much like their infamous, American counterpart “Blackwater”, they provide private security for Russian engineers and businessmen operating inside Iraq.

Somali pirates say they will fight commando raid

By MOHAMED OLAD HASSAN

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — Somali pirates on a hijacked cargo ship holding battle tanks and hostages said Thursday that they were ready to battle any commando-style rescue attempt.

The warning came a day after the Somali government gave foreign powers a blank check for using force against the pirates, while U.S. warships continued to circle nearby and a Russian frigate headed toward the standoff.

“Anyone who tries to attack us or deceive us will face bad repercussions,” the pirates’ spokesman, Sugule Ali, told The Associated Press by satellite telephone from the Ukrainian ship MV Faina.

Ali sounded calm and relaxed despite being surrounded by a half dozen U.S. Navy vessels and buzzed by American helicopters.

News: The Secret War on the Dollar by Oliver North

Thanks to Doug for sending me this.  I was reading about these ‘super notes’ (close to perfect counterfeit dollars) awhile back, and in light of the current economic events, this is somewhat concerning.  The dollar is going to be taking lots of hits here, and these counterfeiting operations or war on our dollar will only add to the damage.  And what really sucks is this has been going on for awhile.

I also brought up below a little history factoid about counterfeiting attacks in the past. Specifically Operation Bernhard, conducted by the Nazis against the allies during World War Two. –Head Jundi

NORTH: Secret war on the dollar

Oliver North

COMMENTARY:

Last Wednesday night, President Bush addressed the nation in an effort to convince Congress to pass a bill to “reduce the risk to major financial institutions” and “safeguard American families and businesses.”

Thursday he met with Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama and other congressional leaders to build a consensus plan for bailing out our financial system. The potentates on the Potomac are now pondering the price-tag for saving Wall Street. Unfortunately, corrupt officials in other capitals are also hard at work undermining what’s left of the U.S. dollar – by printing and distributing their own versions of American currency.
