Leadership: Stanley McChrystal Speaks At Stanford–Leadership Is A Choice

“Leadership is not a talent or a gift. It’s a choice. It’s not complex, but it’s very hard.”, General Stanley McChrystal explains to a packed auditorium of 600 at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. McChrystal shares his perspective on leadership and influence discussing the importance of understanding culture, leading by example, building trust, and creating a common goal within a team.

Cool Stuff: A Swarm Of Nano Quadrotors

Now imagine each one of these quadrotors armed with a small explosive payload? Maybe even use their larger cousins that we saw being used in Libya. (imagine EFP’s mounted to the belly of a larger quadrotor?) Then use them ‘kamakazee style’ for a massive swarm attack or to support an ambush. In other words, it is research like this that is quickly making this stuff a reality. –Matt

Law Enforcement: Florida Trooper Arrests Miami Police Officer In Marked Car For Speeding

Wow, and good on this trooper for pulling over this Miami cop. And you know, she could have easily looked the other way and followed some kind of a ‘blue code’. But she did not, and she had the courage to do the right thing. I would give her a Jundism award for this one!

Hopefully she doesn’t get any reprisals for what she did, and yet again, that whole ‘blue code’ thing could pop up and her life as a trooper could get real lonely. Still, I certainly hope her department takes the right side of this deal, and makes a point that this is exactly what they want in a trooper, and slam any dork that thinks otherwise.

The Miami cop was also off duty and violating the speed limit because he was late for a job. Talk about an abuse of authority? –Matt

Maritime Security: Maersk Discusses Anti-piracy Issues In Interview

This is a nice little interview with one of Maersk’s operations folks and it gives you a good idea as to their thought process and concerns. I really liked it when he mentioned that armed security has a 100 percent success ratio. Hard to argue with those kinds of statistics.

Reuters also posted some good graphics that showed a increase in ransom amounts over the years, but a decrease in the amount of hostages taken in the last year. So the more painful the ransom amounts, the more focus the shipping industry has had in not putting their crews into a position of being taken. Also, if the crews know that the company does not care about their well being, then that could lead to labor disputes. Meaning, striking crews can impact a shipping company’s pocket book.

So bottom line, armed guards on boats protect assets, diminish the possibility of paying more ransoms, protects goods so they make it to port on time and in one piece, and gives the crews the security they deserve during transits. –Matt
