Afghanistan: Marjah Update–The Afghans Are ‘Trash Talking’ Their Way To Victory

   I love stories like this.  I can just picture these guys all grouped together and listening to the radio, and planning their comebacks.  They probably have guys in these groups who pull up the ‘yo momma’ jokes, or some crude reference to ‘relationships with camels’. lol

   So my take on this, is why are we not helping these guys out with trash talk strategy?  In the US, we have some outstanding trash talking comedians or athletes that could certainly advise the Afghan army.  Think about it?  A perfectly crafted comeback or slam, could easily infuriate the opposition to the point of doing something that would compromise their position or force them to do something stupid.  I posted a similar story awhile back of US troops trash talking the Taliban in order to get them out for the fight.  It worked, and if I were these Afghans, and the Coalition forces working with them, I would take advantage of that weakness to no end.  Hell, get creative and infuriate them with the kind of trash talking that only Muhammad Ali or Mike Tyson would be proud of .  If the Taliban is that easily goaded, then by all means that weakness should be exploited. –Matt

Trash Talking the Taliban During Firefights

It’s a remarkable combination of psychological warfare, political roundtable and trash-talking. Afghan soldiers and Taliban fighters taunt each other, debate each other and try to persuade each other almost daily over their radios, at times while even shooting at each other.

I came across the astonishing facet of the Afghan War while spending time with the 302nd kandak, or battalion, of the Afghan National Army. The foes chatter with each other over their Vietnam-era, two-way radio system. It’s such an antiquated system that the Taliban and the Afghan forces share radio frequencies, and verbal barbs, as they try to kill or capture one another.

I asked Maj. Said Rahim Hakmal what they talk about. Politics, he said. “The Taliban will say things like why do you side with the Americans? Why do you sell out your country? You love Obama more than Afghanistan.”

Hakmal said the standard response goes something like, “The Americans are here to help our country function again. They don’t want to stay. They want to help, then leave. You should help, too.”

Then the shooting starts.

To the Taliban, religion is politics and they are willing to die for their way of life. At least half the Afghan Army’s and its government’s job here is to sell the Talibs on the notion that they can have their religion, they just have to keep the politics separate. Easier said than done when it comes to fundamental beliefs about the nature of being and whom the almighty favors.

The Taliban and their politics aside, there are other questions Afghans have for America. While they do appear to trust that America has no interest in colonizing Afghanistan, they wonder about our true motives. Their No. 1 concern, maybe fear: Pakistan. They are desperate to know what America is really up to with their needed yet distrusted neighbor. Who does America support in Pakistan and why? Why doesn’t America, with all its power, just kill all the “terrorists” in Pakistan? For many Afghans, all their problems, and conspiracies, are rooted and imported from Pakistan.

Everybody Has an Opinion

Pro-government Afghans have a harder time wrestling with their beliefs than the Taliban. They have to simultaneously believe that the United States is good and questionable, maybe bad, for Afghanistan. Afghans are all for America when it comes to the surge, defeating the insurgency and building its government. They are less trustful when they look at U.S. actions outside Afghanistan.

It’s like Americans who love their congressmen but have few kind words for Congress.

Afghans want to know just about everything about America but they’ll settle for the American in front of them. The questions are non-stop. Where are you from? Who is your father? How big is your family? Do you have a wife? Children? What do you do for fun? What food do you like? Show me your pictures? Is that your phone? Signal? Can I call home?

When we’d go about our work shooting interviews or sending back material via a small satellite transceiver, the Afghans would gather around as though it were the day’s entertainment. They all want to be interviewed. They don’t really care about the questions. They have an opinion on just about everything and are always ready to share. That, too, reminds me of home.

After 12 days of combat, U.S. commanders said today the worst of the fighting is over and as if to prove the point they watched as the new Afghan government raised its flag over the former Taliban stronghold of Marja for the first time in years.

U.S. military commanders were upbeat, bolstered by the high turnout in the center of town to watch the flag raising ceremony and the swearing-in of Abdul Zahir Aryan as the town’s new administrator.

“What you see here is Afghan government getting under way and the hard work really starts from today onwards,” Major Gen. Nick Carter said.

   For this post, Doug gave me a ton of good ideas and he is certainly a contributor. I also want to thank Amos for the Elephant Chisel idea. This building snowmobiles is an ambitious exploration of drone warfare and what we think it will look like in future wars, and especially at the small unit level. The quote above is more geared towards explaining why precise targeting is so important and why collateral damage will only hurt our efforts in this war.

    Let’s get started. The historical reference for this conversation, will be the “White Company“.  The White Company was a 14th-Century Italian private military company of mercenary archers, led by John Hawkwood. Highly skilled archers were a hot commodity back in that time period, and were a key element to winning wars. John Hawkwood made a ton of money deploying these types of professionals, and because of these highly effective mercenary archers and their fearlessness, all the countries paid a high dollar to get those services.  Matter of fact, that desire to employ the best of the best to win wars, is what would later contribute to the rising debt of countries back then and the creation of the bond in order to help pay for it all. John was also very skilled at playing both sides of the conflict, but that is a different story.

   Another reason why I brought up the White Company, is that this closely mimics what is going on today.  PMC’s are very important to current day drone warfare.  They make the drones, they repair them, they prep them for battle and in some cases they control them.  Of course we are not seeing PMC’s take part in offensive operations, where a drone pilot is actually pulling the trigger on targets, but they are certainly involved with all other aspects of supporting offensive and defensive drone warfare.

   That’s not to say that a PMC wouldn’t be using drones like this in the future, but at this point, it is military drone pilots that are pulling the trigger. What is interesting today, is the close relationship that PMC’s have with the various militaries in the world, for conducting drone warfare. That is why I like using the White Company reference.

    In order to staff a modern day version of the White Company or whatever unit, you need a modern version of archers, or ‘drone archers’. (that would be cool if it catches on as the vernacular for this type of drone warfare)  These folks would be the guys skilled at all aspects of drone warfare and would represent the ‘knife’, as Ho Chi Minh would put it, of a unit.  Drone archers would certainly give any unit the edge in future battles, much like the archers of the White Company did in the 14th century. These expert drone archers would be tasked with preparing and using drones for both offensive and defensive maneuvers, and their precision targeting would be highly valued. (collateral damage will continue to be a bad thing in the future) Think of these drone archers as snipers who attack from the sky.

Publications: CNAS–Contractors in American Conflicts, by John Nagl and Richard Fontaine

   Ok folks, this is pretty important.  CNAS, like I have mentioned before, has the ears of the guys that advise the President on matters like this one.  As you can see, John Nagl is personally involved on this working paper, and you can read his stamp all over this thing. I have been waiting for this paper for awhile, and I am glad they are finally pulling the trigger.

   It is a quick read and the best I could come up with on this, is that CNAS is trying to make the administration feel better for using contractors in the war.  To say ‘it’s ok, we have been using them for awhile, and contractors are the way of the future’. Oh, and we are going to rebrand contractors by calling them ES&R contractors. (Blackwater, eat your heart out)

    You get the idea.  President Obama owns this ‘just war’ now and the increase in the use of contractors is under his watch.  Matter of fact, contractor use has gone up under his leadership, and in Afghanistan we outnumber the troops. Yee haw.  Finally there is a recognition of that fact over at CNAS, and this paper is proof of that.

   With that said, the administration needs ammo for the conversations they have with those who oppose the use of contractors within their party.  Especially with President Obama’s far left supporters and even his more moderate supporters. He needs us for this war, and his party needs some convincing as to the why.

   The reason why I mention the political aspects of this paper, is because the mention of Bosnia and the use of contractors there under the Clinton Administration was very much emphasized.  Nagl and company wanted the reader to know that contractors are not just a tool of the Bush administration and the Republicans.  That the Democrats have a pretty good history of using and enjoying the benefits of contractors during times of conflict as well. Or better yet, we are a tool of America and not some political party.

   So why do I like this paper?  Well it is finally a legitimization of this industry, and at the highest levels of defense think tankery.  CNAS has the ear of all the President’s men, and generals for that matter.  These guys are saying we are a necessity for the war and for future wars, and it is time to figure out how to properly use this tool of warfare called contracting.  It is about smart contracting and dealing with reality.

   Personally, I just think we need strong leadership to make the common sense/necessary decisions to square away contracting.  To demand quality service from contractors, trust but verify that service, and insure tax payer dollars are wisely spent. And then just apply Kaizen to the whole thing to make sure it remains kick ass. If you guys need more people in government to manage these contracts, then get off your ass and hire some folks to get the job done. We are in a recession right now, and I am sure you could get some more people to help out.

   Below I have also put up a few critiques of the paper. (bold is my statement, quoted chunks are CNAS)  One is about the new name CNAS came up for us–‘ES&R contractors’. It has a terrible ring to it. lol  The other is about a lack of proper historical reference–no mention of privateers or the Indian WarsBuffalo Bill Cody was a contractor that received a Medal of Honor, and no mention of that? Wow, talk about selective history recollection? The final one is just a little bit of slam on ‘smart contracting’.  We need good leaders who know their stuff, have the courage to do what is right, and takes care of their people.  Once we have those, then we can implement smart contracting or whatever strategy you want to pursue. Overall, good stuff and I can’t wait for the final product.-Matt

Contractors in American Conflicts: Adapting to a New Reality

When our nation goes to war, contractors go with it. Contractors have become an enduring feature of modern American conflicts, and the United States cannot now engage in hostilities or in reconstruction and stabilization operations without them. At their peak, there were more contractors on the ground in Iraq than American troops in uniform and there are more contractors today in Afghanistan than there are U.S. troops on the ground.However, while private security contractors (PSC) like Blackwater (now knows as Xe Services) have gotten the bulk of public and congressional attention,  they only compromise about 5 percent of all contractors in hostile environments – this working paper, which is part of the CNAS project Contracting in Conflicts , addresses the other 95 percent. That 95 percent represents the vast majority of all the tasks carried out by U.S. contractors in theater, and it has been plagued by its own set of problems – including insufficient oversight, inadequate integration into operational planning, and ambiguous legal status. In order for the United States to adapt to the key role that contractors will play in future hostilities, it must establish new policies and rules of the road.

PMC 2.0: Soldiers Track Each Other With Smart PDAs

   Very cool, and Wired Danger Room pumped out a little deal about this as well.  I don’t think us security contractors will ever have access to this PDA, but really, we don’t need to.  We have access to a multitude of PDA’s or smart phones.  I currently deploy with a iPhone 3GS wrapped in an Otterbox Defender Case, and love it.  For secure communications, I just use Hushmail.  For navigation purposes, I use Google Maps with the GPS interface.  For information collection, I just use Google Search, and can find what I need on a normal browser.  For communications, I can use the phone, text message, or email using 3G or Wifi.  Lots of options. The iPhone is amazing, and it is one of my best investments as far as technology is concerned. The battery life is not too bad either, but that could always be better.  And it will.

   I am also seeing a lot of contractors with smart phones now. It’s either a Blackberry or iPhone, and I think most go with the Blackberry.  With that said, companies need to get on board with getting mobile friendly, and explore the numerous ways that they can tap into this technology that all of us are using now.  And believe me, there will come a point where everyone will get a PDA with their mobile plans, and basic cellphones will just kind of fade away.  Better to start thinking about this stuff now in my opinion. –Matt

Soldiers Track Each Other With Smart PDAs

Many of the military’s ground vehicles are equipped with blue force tracking systems that help troops monitor the locations of friendly units and enemy forces. But when soldiers dismount to patrol an area on foot, they lose that digital awareness of their surroundings.

The Army’s troubled Land Warrior program — a wearable computer, GPS, radio and monocle display technology ensemble — was designed to give dismounted troops that battlefield information. The program is still alive and showing progress, according to Army officials.

A team at Lockheed Martin Corp.’s Advanced Technology Laboratories in Cherry Hill, N.J., meanwhile, has developed a Land Warrior-like handheld computer for small infantry units to track and communicate with each other on the ground.

The “distributed operations,” or “DisOps,” system consists of a group of PDAs and a software package that can be installed on a laptop.

Books: Marketing Warfare, by Al Ries and Jack Trout

    It is always interesting to read about how the concepts of war fighting are used in other areas of industry, not related to war.  This book was a quick read, and certainly worthy of your time.  These guys break down Clausewitz and Sun Tzu, and apply them to marketing.  This book is an excellent primer on basic military strategy, as well as opening up the fascinating and war-like world of marketing.

   I really liked reading about the burger wars, in which McDonalds competes with Burger King and others on the battlefield of the cut throat fast food industry.  Every move of these companies were compared to basic military strategy, and it is a blow by blow account of where they did well and where they screwed up in these battles.  The book is an After Action Review of these marketing battles. Other companies mentioned were IBM, Fedex, and Coke to name a few.  And because this book was written 20 years ago, this current edition has been updated with mentions of the current war and recent marketing battles.

   But the real reason I liked this book, is that I read it from a Counter-insurgency point of view, and how these marketing principles could help win over the local populations in places like Afghanistan and Iraq.  This is nothing new, and I know the war machine out there has been calling up some of these marketing gurus for ideas, but it is still fascinating to learn about the concepts.  And for the ground level commander, they could easily use these concepts of marketing to sell their ideas to the local population.  Hell, most of us already have the mindset of what good marketing strategy is, based off of our military backgrounds.

   Which brings up the concept of the ‘Anbar Awakening’ or ‘Awakening Councils’.  To look at this from a marketing point of view is very interesting.  Once this tactic was identified as successful in Iraq, it was rolled up into a overall marketing strategy of the war effort. Tactics drive Strategy.   And I say marketing strategy, because we had to sell this tactic to the Iraqis, to the American public, to congress and to the world as the new thing that will work.  Interesting stuff and I recommend the book. –Head Jundi

The authors have tricked up this pedestrian book on how companies outmaneuver their competition by modeling it on von Clausewitz’s 1832 treatise On War. Forget customer surveys and what customers think they want: go after your competition as though you are conducting a military campaign. Use defensive warfare if you are on the “high terrain,” i.e., the industry leader, where often “the best defensive strategy is to attack youself.’ What does this mean? Translated, like IBM, you periodically come out with product improvements that make your old line obsolete. Second-and third-ranking companies should use offensive warfare. Here, set your sights on the industry leader and mass all your resources to attack at the weakest point. Avis, for instance, went after Hertz by emphasizing that it provided better service. They once had the slogan: “Rent from Avis. The line at our counter is shorter.” Companies in the middle should use “flanking warfare.” This may mean creating entirely new products: minicomputers or “Lite” beer, for example.
