Chris Hughes, a founder of Facebook Inc. who later deployed the website My.BarackObama.com to build an online network for the presidential campaign, will be joining the Cambridge venture capital firm General Catalyst Partners as an entrepreneur in residence.

The move, set to be disclosed today by General Catalyst, is a part of the firm’s effort to build a new generation of digital media and social-networking start-ups on the East Coast, particularly in Boston and New York.

Podcasts: NPR-Behind The Business Plan of Pirates Inc.

I posted the initial story awhile back under ‘paracargo’, with a photo of some cash being dropped to a boat to pay off the pirates.  That part was fascinating to me, but this part of the operation is equally fascinating.  Matter of fact, the whole thing should be a case study at some maritime institute for modern day piracy and kidnap and ransom negotiations on the high seas.  –Matt

A container is parachuted to a ship being held by Somali pirates on Jan. 9. It’s believed the container held ransom money for the ship and its crew — the usual way pirates collect “pay” for their “work” in the piracy business model.

Behind The Business Plan Of Pirates Inc.

by Chana Joffe-Walt

All Things Considered, April 30, 2009 ·

Piracy off the coast of Somalia has become an international problem — and an international business. Navy SEALS rescued an American merchant captain earlier this month after Somali pirates raided the Maersk Alabama as it was making its way around the Horn of Africa to deliver aid.

But the issues of criminality and the potential for violence aside, a closer look at the “business model” of piracy reveals that the plan makes economic sense.

To me, the Swiss Guard are pretty interesting, because back in the day, these guys were the Blackwater of the industry.  But talk about pleasing the customer and hanging onto a contract? lol –Matt

Pope’s Swiss Guard may allow women after 500-year ban

Tue May 5, 2009

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – After more than five centuries protecting popes, the Swiss Guard may consider opening the ranks of the world’s smallest army to women, its commander said Tuesday.

“I can imagine them for one role or another. Certainly we can think about this,” Daniel Anrig, who took over the post late last year, told Italian television program “Studio Aperto.”

Fish and Game: Feral Hogs on Feral Jundi

The fish and game category should be a good one.  I like to hunt and fish, as do a lot of folks that read FJ, and I thought this would be a fun one to start up. Thanks to Doug for sharing, and these feral pigs were shot out in Texas. –Matt

First pig…heart shot..100 yards…ran 20 yards then dropped.

Second pig..round went through heart & lungs..150 yards…as per all the pink bubbles…dropped on the spot

Third pig..dropped on spot..150 yards..got up after about 10 seconds and ran into woods. Got a second shot off at him, but with fast moving target, by that time was at 200 yards range, & failing light I can’t be confident of the shot.  It broke right as he entered the treeline.  I will look for him tomorrow morning when it is daylight. –Doug

Jobs: Maritime Security Agent(s)

This is great news, and I hope to see more maritime security stuff flying in the future.  Please note, these are two separate job postings and I am not the point of contact for these gigs.

By the way, if you take these gigs, please apply some Jundism to the contract. Be the guy that does it right, when no one is looking. Be a good leader by knowing your stuff, having the courage to do what is right, and taking care of your people.

We have a real opportunity here to be the ‘good idea’ out there and make a real contribution to the safety and security of the shipping industry. The eyes of the world are on us, and they will rip us apart if we screw this up. –Matt
