Cool Stuff: Operation Outpost

Now this is cool.  This company was founded by two contractors operating in Afghanistan and what they have set up is a way for folks who are deployed to hook each other up with needed equipment and items out in the field. A war zone Craigslist of a sorts. It kind of reminds me of the guns and ammo exchange clubs you would see on the forums.

On those sites, guys would have stuff they wanted to get rid of, and they would either sell it or trade for something else with some other contractor. Although with this site, I don’t think they plan on doing any weapons related stuff, and it seems to be all just equipment and other necessities of field living.

I really like the option of being able to donate as well.  There are people out there who care about the troops and contractors, and want to contribute some way to the war effort.  This site is a great way to connect these supporters to the guys out in the field, and fill some specific needs of field living. Be sure to read all the details below and go to their website to see how to join. –Matt

OPERATION OUTPOST

ABOUT

Operation Outpost was created by two people who, while deployed to Afghanistan, recognized a need for forward deployed individuals to be able to buy, sell, trade, and receive donated items that increased their standard of living in remote areas.  The purpose of this site is to provide these individuals the opportunity to contact each other in an effort to obtain items that they require to make it day to day.

Additionally, Operation Outpost is proud to offer the “Donation” option to our members.  We have heard time and time again of people back home that want to donate various items but have no idea of what to send, who to send it to, or where to send it.  The donations option will allow the member to list items they wish someone would donate to them personally or to their unit.  Individuals from around the world can view this page and chose what donation they would like to send.  Patriots can also list items they would like to donate, this way forward deployed members can view all donations listed, and if interested, can contact the donor and provide the necessary information for the donation to be shipped.

ABOUT THE OWNERS

David D. Jason – President

David D. Jason, President, of Operation Outpost entered the United States Marine Corps after graduating from Northern Nash Senior High School in 1989.  David was an I-level Fixed Wing Avionics Electrician and supervisor for 20 years.  During his active service time he attended Southern Illinois University and DeVry University receiving a bachelor’s degree in Technical Management.  David retired from active duty July of 2009.  His wife Laurie, of 13 years, and his two children currently wait patiently for his safe return at their home just north of Tampa Florida.

While serving in the Marine Corps David had deployed on numerous occasions to different parts of the world.  David has lived and existed in various conditions where the quality of life has been less than adequate.  Today, David still serves as he is currently deployed as a civilian contractor in Afghanistan.  Over the years he has come to understand the need for a website like this.  Operation Outpost was created to help and assist all forward deployed personnel in coping with and improving their quality of life.

Brent M. Piatti – Vice-President

Brent M. Piatti, Vice-President of Operation Outpost, is a 10 year Veteran with his Active Duty service as a Paratrooper in the Army’s best division in the world, the 82nd Airborne Division!  After receiving an Honorable Discharge from the Army he joined the Reserves and went on to pursue his degree from North Carolina State University, and achieved a B.S. in Business Management & Marketing in 2006.

Brent has moved on to various roles in civilian life, but kept the Military close to his heart, and because of that he chose to move into his most recent role as a Private Military Contractor and a year plus deployment to Afghanistan.  It was while living in Afghanistan where his colleague (David D. Jason) and he developed the idea of Operation Outpost.  It is their belief that deployed personnel need ways to improve their quality of life and Operation Outpost gives all of us who are deployed that ability.  This is where the Operation Outpost motto of “Improving Quality of Life for Those on the Front Lines” came from.

How To…

BUYING ITEMS

Operation Outpost allows an individual to search the site for items they wish to purchase.  You do not need to be a member to view the items or contact the seller/donor on Operation Outpost, but you must be a member to post items.  You may search for a specific item by using the search feature on our website and it will retrieve the items you wish to see from the Operation Outpost database.  Once you have found an item of interest you may click on the “Contact” sidebar to the right of the item so that you can contact the seller and work the terms of the agreement and purchase the item from the seller.

POSTING ITEMS TO SELL

Posting an item to sell allows a person to place an item for sale on Operation Outpost.  You must be a member to sell any item.  When you select “Post A Classified”, you will be transferred to the selling page and here you will provide item information, upload pictures and choose if you want your item listed as a Standard Item or as a Featured Item.  Both Standard and Featured items will remain on Operation Outpost for 90 days, but there are differences between the two:

Standard Listing: FREE, you can post your item and it will remain on the site for 90 days.  Your item will be listed by date posted in the center of the page with all the other items on the Operation Outpost database.

Featured Listing: For $1, you can post your item and it will remain on the site for 90 days.  Your item will be listed by date posted in the center of the page with the standard post, but will be highlighted in YELLOW in the category the item is posted in, and additionally in the “Featured Items” slider at the top of the home page.  The “Featured Items” slider will rotate through the items on the database on the home page that a buyer sees, once again, improving the chances your item will be seen.  NOTE: Post your classified as usual and in Part B of the submission process check the “Featured Listing” box at the bottom of the page.

DONATIONS

Selecting DONATIONS transfers you to a page that lists two choices.  DONATIONS or WANTED.  You must be a member of Operation Outpost to post or to receive donations. Posting a request for a donation and posting a donation will remain online for 90 days.

Selecting MAKE DONATION allows anyone or any group to post items they wish to donate to forward deployed individuals or units.   Place your item in the DONATIONS category.  The posting of donations is FREE and you are required to be a member. Once your donation is posted forward deployed individuals or units can review the donations and contact the donator to provide an address for where the donations are to be sent.

WARNING:  To minimize the abuse of this option, donors must remember that forward deployed personnel and units will have an FPO or APO/AE address.  An interested party who does not provide an FPO or APO/AE address is not forward deployed and may be attempting to abuse someone’s good nature.

To receive donations select CURRENTLY DEPLOYED which allows forward deployed individuals the opportunity to post a request for certain items they wish to be donated to them or their unit. Place your request in the WANTED category.  Requesting a donation is FREE and you are required to be a member.  Once your request for donation is posted people or groups from all over the world can view this list and choose if they wish to donate any of the requested items.  If they decide to donate those items, they will click on your request and contact you to finalize the donation.

WARNING:  To minimize the abuse of this option, those requesting donations should provide an FPO or APO/AE address.
