Industry Talk: Rep. Hastings Probes Plight of HWA Security Guards

Now this  story pisses me off.  This company was tasked with protecting these federal facilities, had a default on contract, and for whatever reason has decided to stop payments to employees.  Pfffft. Hopefully Rep. Hastings will be able to get to the bottom of what is going on with this disaster. –Matt

Hastings probes plight of HWA security guards

September 26th, 2009

Approximately 200 private security guards throughout the Northwest from Portland to Boise who were abandoned in August by their employer — HWA security in Seattle — may end up going two months or more before federal officials can make up their missing wages.

Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Wash., is aware of the hardship caused for HWA’s employees and has been working for a couple of weeks to help them recover their money, said Charlie Keller, the congressman’s spokesman.

Keller said Hastings has contacted the U.S. Department of Labor on behalf of the HWA employees.

“We want to hear from anyone who has this problem. (Everyone) will be paid for all their back pay. How long it will take I can’t say. People should call our Pasco office,” Keller said. The phone for that office is 509-543-9396.

Most HWA guards have continued to staff their posts since federal agencies hired other security companies to take over HWA’s defaulted contracts.

Books: Security Contracting, by Jake Allen

Hey guys and gals, this is pretty cool. Normally, I am always promoting some book of an author that I don’t know.  In this case, I know the book and the author, and I am really excited to promote both.

Jake has been working hard on this book over the last year or so in regards to starting and maintaining a career in security contracting. Not to mention doing that, along with all of his work setting up and maintaining Combat Operator and the Private Military Herald. This book is a compilation of information accumulated only from years of experience, from industry information saturation as a writer, and from learning the hard lessons that go along with this industry. If you are looking for a book that is written by a security contractor, for security contractors, then this is it.

I often wish I had a book like this to help me out in the early days. Like most, I just fumbled along and built my knowledge base from hours of reading bits and pieces at the forums. There are not too many ‘DIY’ manuals for overseas security contracting, and Jake’s book is a great resource for your career.

For you guys that have websites or online stores, Jake has an affiliate program for this book as well. (which I am a member of)  This is a great way to spread the word on how to get into security contracting, and make a little a coin on the side. It is very easy to sign on with this program, and Jake and the affiliate company will totally help you out in setting your stuff up right. Follow the link below for more information.

Finally, two dollars from each sale of this book will be going to the Wounded Warrior’s Foundation. I like that, because these guys have provided a lot of help to the wounded and their families in this war, and that is something I can rally around. Check it out and pass it on. –Matt

Podcasts: PMH Radio Interviews Danielle Brian of POGO

Outstanding interview, and such a treat.  Thanks to Danielle and Jake for a an enlightening interview.  I learned a lot about what POGO is, and what it can do for this industry and my fellow security contractors. I am especially impressed with POGO’s dedication in keeping all communications with whistleblowers private and protected. –Matt

Industry Talk: PMH Exclusive–David Isenberg Analyzes Gordon Vs. AGNA

Check it out folks.  David went through the entire suit and commented on each aspect of the thing.  What is key about that, is David’s vast knowledge base about AGNA and AGI and his ability to remember all the cool little details that only add to this stew of information.  Bottom line, I wanted to puke after reading this, and I am so sorry that Gordon and company all had to go through what you went through on this contract. (according to Danielle in the PMH show, there are at least thirty plus guys who have reported problems)

Those lewd party pictures are stupid, but the actual details of this contract are the real story here. I highly recommend reading through this if you have the time, and learn what not to do on a contract. –Matt
