Military News: Military Pay Competitive With Private Sector

   I tend to agree that the total compensation package that the military offers these days, is pretty damn good.  I have yet to work for a company that has offered the same benefits that the military has to offer.  If anything, the only reason why salary is more for contractors, is because of this fact.  Not to mention that many companies that use independent contractors do not offer retirement plans or medical plans.  Nope, when you cut away from the military umbilical cord, you are on your own.  That is why I tell guys to save your pennies, because you never know how long your contract will last or even how long your company will be around.

   And to add further to this article, I know of some contractors that have gone back to the military.  One of the reasons for that is stability for their family, or to get certifications that are tough to get anywhere else (like clearances).  Some guys join up in Guard units so they can serve and be a contractor at the same time.  That is an optimum set up, but you don’t have much of a personal life with that one.

   Finally, there are the tax incentives of military versus contractor.  If a contractor does not get their 330 days overseas, or is not able to claim residency in a foreign country, they will be taking a huge hit in taxes.  Some guys are able to get their 330 days, but many are not able to enjoy the foreign earned income tax credit.  The reason for that is a family emergency or the company just doesn’t have enough work for you to stay overseas for that long.  Or your contract could end. There is a number of things that could happen to you last minute, that could screw up your plans for taxes, and it pays to be prepared. –Matt

Military pay competitive with private sector

April 30, 2010WASHINGTON: Military compensation is competing well against the private sector, as evidenced by the high rate of recruitment and retention, a Defense Department official told a Senate subcommittee today.

Therefore, the department is focusing on targeted special pays and bonuses as an efficient means to give incentives for people to sign up for hard-to-fill and hard-to-retain specialties, William J. Carr, deputy undersecretary of defense for personnel policy, told the Senate Armed Services Committee’s personnel subcommittee.

Using regular military compensation – basic pay combined with housing and food allowances and federal tax advantages – as a comparison, military members are paid higher than 70 percent of their private-sector peers of similar education and experience, Carr said.

Afghanistan: The Taliban Pay More Than The Afghan Army?

   I am sorry, but this is unacceptable.  So all along, the Taliban have been paying more for it’s recruits than the Afghan Army has been paying theirs?  Who dropped the ball on this one, because this is huge in my book. For any strategists who would like to learn a quick lesson on war and economics, especially coming from one of us ‘evil security contractors’, the math is simple.  The locals will always go for the best deal possible, and if the Taliban are paying more, then of course they are going to join them.

   It reminds me of the latest GAO report on the State Department’s problem with trying hire enough supervisors to manage the WPPS crew.  If you pay so little for a position like this, what do you expect? Of course contractors are not going to sign up for such a thing.  I love the phrase, ‘pay peanuts and you get monkeys’.  Well in this case, the applicable phrase is that you ‘get what you pay for’.

   Not to mention the fact that every village and tribe out there is hedging their bets right now as to who will be in charge a year from now, five years from now, ten years from now, and etc.  If survival means working for their cousin up in the hills as a ‘little T’ or contract Taliban, and make a little money off the venture, then so be it.  Until the government of Afghanistan can show that it is not corrupt and that it is willing to actually pay their guys a decent salary, then of course these folks are gonna go for the better deal.

     The Afghan Army has to show capability as well, and if they lack motivation or discipline to accomplish the mission of killing the Taliban and company, then why would anyone want to join them? Success breeds success, and everyone likes a winner.

   Glad to see someone woke up and realized that this needed fixing. I think the Army will definitely see an uptick in recruits and in retention, and in turn, less recruits for the Taliban. Duh.

    The other question though is how long can we, I mean the Afghans, pay for these salaries?  Unlike Iraq with it’s oil, Afghanistan really has nothing to pay for anything. –Matt

Obama strategy depends on well-trained force

KABUL — A recent pay increase for Afghan troops and police appears to have resulted in a surge of applicants, said the top U.S. military official for Afghan security training.

Lt. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV, citing Afghan statistics, said 2,659 Afghans had applied to join the security forces in the first seven days of this month, about half of the month’s recruiting objective. In the three previous months, recruiting fell short of targets, with only 830 applicants in September, he said.

President Obama’s new strategy for Afghanistan, which calls for 30,000 U.S. reinforcements next year, depends heavily on the rapid development of a well-trained Afghan force that can begin to take over security from U.S. and NATO forces. Afghanistan has about 97,000 troops and 95,000 police officers, but they are poorly trained, have high turnover rates and are prone to corruption.

Industry Talk: Rep. Hastings Probes Plight of HWA Security Guards

   Now this  story pisses me off.  This company was tasked with protecting these federal facilities, had a default on contract, and for whatever reason has decided to stop payments to employees.  Pfffft. Hopefully Rep. Hastings will be able to get to the bottom of what is going on with this disaster. –Matt

Hastings probes plight of HWA security guards

September 26th, 2009

Approximately 200 private security guards throughout the Northwest from Portland to Boise who were abandoned in August by their employer — HWA security in Seattle — may end up going two months or more before federal officials can make up their missing wages.

Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Wash., is aware of the hardship caused for HWA’s employees and has been working for a couple of weeks to help them recover their money, said Charlie Keller, the congressman’s spokesman.

Keller said Hastings has contacted the U.S. Department of Labor on behalf of the HWA employees.

“We want to hear from anyone who has this problem. (Everyone) will be paid for all their back pay. How long it will take I can’t say. People should call our Pasco office,” Keller said. The phone for that office is 509-543-9396.

Most HWA guards have continued to staff their posts since federal agencies hired other security companies to take over HWA’s defaulted contracts.
