History: President Lincoln’s PSD Team–The Pinkerton National Detective Agency

“We Never Sleep” -Company slogan of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency

*****

This is some cool history that I wanted to put out there.  The Pinkertons were a major part of the history of the US, and certainly contributed greatly to the security of this nation.  These guys were private investigators, but they were also security providers that actually protected President Lincoln. They were also Lincoln’s ‘goto’ guys for intelligence.  Not to mention that they also protected stage coaches and wagon trains during the days of the wild west and participated in many significant labor disputes as striker breakers. They are very much a part of American history.

Matter of fact, I look at these guys the same way I look at today’s security contractors in the war.  The best visual example of what I am talking about was the modern film version of 3:10 to Yuma, starring Christian Bale and Russell Crowe.  Peter Fonda stars in this movie as well, and he plays a crusty old Pinkerton ‘convoy leader’. I call him a convoy leader, because that is what he was doing in this fight scene.  Even the Gatling gun mounted on the back of the stage coach reminded me of today’s ‘trunk monkey‘  in a convoy or PSD operation.

The history of the Pinkertons is a reminder to all Americans that security contractors are and will always be a necessary component of the security of this great nation. And the controversies surrounding this industry are nothing new either.

I put up the Homestead Strike story, along with the Anti-Pinkerton Act (APA) story as a reminder of some hard core American history.  The Pinkertons were contracted to do some tough strike breaking, and I can only imagine how crazy that must have been for those agents back then. I am sure the Pinkertons were also pretty miffed that they got sucked into the politics of the incident, and eventually paid a price with the APA.

Going from being the President’s personal body guards and intelligence service, to being singled out with a law that made it illegal for the government to contract with the Pinkertons for strike work, must have been a hard pill to swallow. As crappy as that must have been, the Pinkertons drove on and are still in existence today.

I will end this with another quote. President Obama said after his trip to Afghanistan during his campaign trail and obligations as a Senator, that “Blackwater is getting a bad rap”. He said this, because this was the company contracted to protect him at the time. Hmmm.  I think the same statement could be said about the entire security contracting industry, both in the past and present. –Matt

The Pinkerton Detective Agency -Operating For 150 Years

From the Legends of America Website

Founded by Allan Pinkerton, a Scottish immigrant in 1850, the Pinkerton Agency quickly became one of the most important crime detection and law enforcement groups in the United States. Born in Scotland on August 25, 1819, Allan Pinkerton worked as a barrel maker before immigrating to the United States in 1842. Settling near Chicago, Illinois, he went to work at Lill’s Brewery as a barrel maker. However, Pinkerton soon determined that working for himself would be more profitable for his family and they moved to a small town called Dundee, some forty miles from Chicago.

Making barrels once again, he quickly gained control of the market due to the superior quality and low prices of his product.

Iran: Nuclear Site Could Pose Test to U.S., Israel Ties

I posted the main story last for a reason. This new nuclear site is a game changer in my opinion. It only accelerates and agitates the process, and time is not on our side here.

And then there was the speech. Netanyahu’s speech at the UN was the exact opposite of Gaddafy’s, meaning it was compelling and heart wrenching, and it was also an indicator of what could be next for Israel. Israel has made clear, time and time again, that Iran with a nuclear bomb is a threat to the existence of Israel and unacceptable.

That says to me that they plan on eventually attacking Iran and destroying their ability to manufacture a nuclear bomb.  Israel did this with Iraq and Syria, so logic being, Iran is next. When this happens is anyone’s guess.  Either way, Israel will not allow any threats to it’s existence, and will act accordingly.

The question I have with this, is what would the US reaction be if Israel tries to fly over Iraq to attack Iran? Or what would be the military reaction of Iran and how would that impact our mission in Iraq or Afghanistan?  Interesting and scary stuff. –Matt

At U.N., Iranian’s Speech Draws Angry Words From Netanyahu

By Colum LynchWashington Post Staff WriterFriday, September 25, 2009

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 24 — Brandishing Nazi orders for the extermination of Jews, Israel’s prime minister blasted Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Thursday for continuing to deny that the Holocaust occurred, and he rebuked U.N. delegates who had listened politely to the Iranian leader’s speech on Wednesday, demanding, “Have you no shame?”

Industry Talk: Company Spotlight–Space Gateway Support and KSC SWAT

How would you like to be the guy protecting the Space Shuttle and NASA’s employees and facilities? Talk about a big responsibility? lol

I tell yah, contractors just don’t get any respect these days, yet we are used to protect this country’s space program.  Not to mention all the nuclear facilities that contractors are tasked with protecting….

Or for that matter, how about all of the protection specialists out there that protect Fortune 500 CEO’s, politicians, dignitaries, and celebrities here in the US or in war zones and third world countries?  It really is impressive when you think about how much security stuff is contracted out.  Security contractors and the companies they work for are doing incredible things out there, and Space Gateway Support along with KSC SWAT is one of them.  Check it out. –Matt

Industry Talk: GAO Finds Major Security Lapses at Federal Buildings

I see a couple of failures here.  For one, you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. I would guarantee if the companies paid a decent salary for these positions, they would attract employees that would care.  But the one salary they certainly should not skimp on is the supervisor.  A well paid supervisor that knows what they are doing, could easily shore up these security issues brought up by the GAO.

Be that as it may, most of these companies could care less about customer service or satisfaction, and most could care less about Kaizen.  Primarily because the feds have yet to put the pressure on them, and doing just ‘good enough’ is financially sound to them.  It costs money to train and costs money to get good people.  Might as well just run the show all shabby until someone blows the whistle–no one cares, until now.

And then there is the lapse of federal oversight, which continues to be lightly mentioned in the MSM over and over.  I will not beat that dead horse.  Although I will go back to the main solution to these problems.  It’s leadership all the way.  It’s a good leader that monitors and tests the abilities of it’s security force and insures that the post orders are being followed.  It’s a good leader that recognizes deficiencies in the guard force and corrects them on the spot.  It’s a good leader that applies Kaizen, customer service and customer satisfaction to their security services. If the FPS and the companies recognized the value of focusing on these supervisors, and insuring that they are in fact getting the right man for the job, then these issues will be corrected.

The leadership within the FPS and Companies need to be evaluated as well.  Did those leaders tasked with managing these supervisors and regions do the things necessary to insure things were going well out there?  Did they have a ‘shared reality’ with their men out in the field, or did they lead from a desk?  I think we know the answer, and the proof is in the pudding. –Matt

Technology: SOS Link Gearing Up to Turn Smartphones Into Personal Security Devices

I posted this in regards to enhancing a protective details security plan.  If you are protecting a client that has a smart phone, having a SOS Link set up on it could definitely help out.  Especially for stalkers or during the early phases of kidnapping. I am not sure about the language transmitter though, and I don’t think that would be enough to stop anyone.  But taking video and recording sound as soon as the SOS Link is pushed on a phone is very handy, and puts that information into the right hands.  That information could be crucial to the investigation of trying to find a person within the first 48 hours.  Even the GPS function will be nice, all the way up until the bad guys detain the phone.  Interesting stuff and the various applications being made for these phones is amazing. –Matt
